... & then I'll learn how to spell 'chimney' properly :)

Good thing to train for imho. Gas and electric will be a luxury for the rich one day and everyone will be back to burning logs etc.
By:
Plenty of houses up this way still burn logs.
By:
You have to learn to keep your knees up step in time.
Whatever that means. |
By:
Pro rata up £45 per five mins & it's quite a living! Obviously, I'm fully aware you might only get to do eight or nine houses a day, but still. What a breeze.
By:
Saturdays can also be spent getting a wedge off newly weds for turning up at their wedding.

Be careful starting at this time of year ...
a friend of mine only had a Dyson and whilst doing a chimney hoover near about this time last year a bid red thing and a large sack blocked his hoover solid . |

Joe - the old ones are always the best :D

I'm fully aware you might only get to do eight or nine houses a day .. =============== :^0 :^0 :^0 Cloud Cuckoo land !! BUT to be helpful , as a Chimney Sweep Wedding Accessory you can charge more than your £45 and keep clean without all that muck + soot ,OH and you get to kiss the bride ;-) |

My chimney sweep is always booked up two months in advance.Book early
By:
How many a day then Joe? Your knowledge of chimney sweeping seems to be better than mine! ;)
(check bamboo's comment) |
By:
You can also be an extra in remakes of old films, eg. Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
By:
Nirv - endless work opportunities! Sorted :)
By:
You won't be getting ANY work from me Alex.
There aren't many of us left but thankfully I am a traditionalist, intent on preserving the best British traditions. Twice a year I employ a hand-picked team of young urchins from local schools or as a last resort the children of my neighbours, and send them up the chimney to clean them. There's a shiny sixpence in it for them all too, subject to satisfactory completion of work, and quite honestly Lord Shaftesbury can go to hell. Still, I wish you every success with your new business venture. |

very good alun, not seen a chimney sweep for 40 yeras. How I loved seeing the brush coming out of the top of the chimney when I was a lad.

LOL ..me too |
By:
Good, glad it was not just me. :-) I found it truly fascinating for some reason.
By:
A truly honourable occupation...on a par with coalman imo, but without the pain of nutty slack digging into your back.

When we were very young we used to have the chimney sweep visit every Summer, and yes, I too used to enjoy seeing the brush emerge from the chimney.
However, I have to say the big day was always rather a scary occasion. The living room first had to be virtually cleared of all furniture and personal items, the chimney sweep was a sinister looking man dressed in black, and the cleaning machine made a terrifying sound. Did anyone else have the looming sense of Armageddon when these visits took place? |
By:
TBF the bloke who turned up to 'do' my chimney the other day was semi-fearsome looking.
By:
You can do it yourself, it's not rocket science.
By:
Neither is laying carpets, but I pay someone to do that as well
By:
After I swept your chimney you'd need a new carpet.
By:
The carpet layer who comes to lay my elderly mother's carpets wears quite inappropriate T-shirts (sexual innuendo).
Is it compulsory for all these occasional visiting household workmen have to have the scent of Beelzebub about them? |

These saintly men set the benchmark for sweeping chimneys

By:
Alun - the chimney sweep didn't smell too much, but the carpet fitter did (vaguely of fox' p!ss - and he didn't even have ginger hair)

(quality clip btw)

manys the young urchin disappeared up a chimney ner to be seen again :0 :0
By:
Thank you Alex. I've heard enough. Anne Robinson will be getting a stiffly worded letter from me about this. The public need to be warned. The fox pi$$ was the final straw.
By:
GL Alun - let me know how you get on! I met Robinson once & she wasn't half the battle axe she's made out to be :D

Alex if Chimney sweeping goes wrong you could always make a living as a Tracker ...your discerning nose able to pick up from a scent that the urine smell is a fox's not a cat, badger , horse ,etc, is in much demand in the central Inner city part of London where they DO pay BIG bucks + bonuses ..
I hear all the time BIG players in the Financial sector saying "I must get a Tracker".....................hope this helps |
By:
Well Joe, I do have a liking for choc chip Trackers so that would be right up my street :^0
By:
Bloke that swept my chimney a few weeks back told me he used to work as a software developer, had enough of office work and took over his dad's sweep business. Says business is booming.
By:
Mind you don't catch chimney flue.
By:
... and if you get a booking from a Mr Corbett, i'd think twice about accepting...
