why does rainwater not come down the chimney?

but hits the sides and sticks in the soot ..
there are also bends in chimneys to stop it running into your living room ...all black + horrible ..

I have a couple of really large chimneys at one of my houses and I had to put a cowl on because some rain hit the hearth in heavy periods.
