just imagine leaving your house at 2.30 am. reverse into water hydrant then drive forward and crash into tree in property next door. with no drink involved he was certainly seriously distracted. then wife smashes rear window with golf club to rescue him and get him out if the vehicle. they must think people are VERY stupid to believe a story like that

website TMZ - which broke the news of Michael Jackson's death - later alleged Woods was injured when his wife scratched his face during a heated row over reports that he was having an affair.

The alleged row came after paparazzi-style photos of glamorous New Yorker Rachel Uchitel - to be published by the National Enquirer tomorrow - leaked on to the internet.

Websites claimed the pictures were taken as she checked into Melbourne's Crown Towers this month.

Woods stayed at the Crown Towers with his mother, Kultilda, when he contested the Australian Masters at Kingston Heath on November 15.

TMZ said Ms Nordegren confronted Woods over reports of an affair.

The celebrity website also obtained a copy of the police accident report, which listed Woods' injuries as serious.

TMZ claimed Nordegren scratched Woods' face during the heated argument, leading the golfing ace to jump into his car and leave the house.

"But according to our source, Woods says his wife followed behind with a golf club. As Tiger drove away, she struck the vehicle several times with the club," TMZ claimed.

TMZ said Woods was distracted, causing the crash.

The National Enquirer said Ms Uchitel and lawyers for Woods vehemently denied allegations of an affair.

The National Enquirer said it had spoken to her at Crown.

But the New York Daily News said she sent them a message from her Facebook page that read: "There is NO relationship with Tiger.

"I resent my name being slung thru the mud."

Ms Uchitel, 34, a VIP hostess and events planner at some of Manhattan's top nightspots, also told the New York Post: "God forbid Tiger got into a car wreck because of this false report of him having an affair."

She lost her fiance in the September 11 attacks on New York.

Meanwhile, Woods was on Saturday holed up inside his home, in an exclusive gated estate adjoining an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course.

He had been taken by ambulance to the Health Central Hospital for treatment.

Woods' representatives would not comment on reports the couple fought before the crash.

A statement on Tiger's official website said: "Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident outside his home last night. He was admitted, treated and released today in good condition.

"We appreciate very much everyone's thoughts and well wishes."

Officers from the Florida Highway Patrol went to his home to interview him, but were turned away.

TMZ said Ms Nordegren told them Woods was sleeping. They were expected to return today to formally interview the world's greatest golfer and first $1 billion sports star.

Windermere Police Chief Daniel Saylor said Ms Nordegren told officers she was in the house when she heard the accident and came outside.

Using a golf club, she shattered the car's rear window so she could unlock the door and drag Woods out of the wreck.

She lay him down on the street as shocked neighbours gathered. One local brought him a pillow and a blanket.

Police arrived to find the champion semi-conscious.

"He had lacerations to his upper and lower lip, and a little bit of blood in his mouth," Chief Saylor said.

"They asked his wife what happened. She said the car hit a fire hydrant then a tree."

He said police found Woods lying in the street, slipping in and out of consciousness with his wife hovering over him.

Chief Saylor said: "When he woke up, he tried to get up and lost consciousness."

He said Ms Nordegren had been hysterical when police arrived.

"She was very distraught, very upset," he said.

Police gave him first aid until fire rescue came about 10 minutes later and transferred him in an ambulance to hospital.

Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Kim Montes confirmed they had not yet been able to speak to Woods because of his need for treatment.

Mr Montes said charges could be filed if there was a traffic violation, though troopers did not know what caused the accident.

An extremely private man, Woods has always kept his personal life out of the headlines.

The golfer, who earns $100 million a year, could be charged even though officials said drugs and alcohol were not involved.
