Get a malt. Glenmorangie's a good bet. Laphroaig, Glenlivet are good, too, but expensive.
By:
Just buy a few random half bottles and have a blind tasting.More fun.
By:
Best non-malt may be Black Label, if you don't want to spend too much.
By:
you should stick to single malts if possible, any of the big names will be ok but my choice would be Lagavulin :)
By:
1. Aberfeldy
2. Talisker 3. Johnnie Walker - Black Label |
By:
yes he likes johnnie wakler, i remember him mentioning that. he drinks the black one but i heard him say once he'd love to try the blue one one day... looked it up and it's £140 a bottle ffs!
will have a look at that link, thanks for all the advice so far if there's one thing chit chat knows about it's drinking :) |
By:
There's now a gold label version of Johnnie Walker, not had it yet myself, its rather pricey.
By:
Laphroiag is like TCP avoid it unless you know he likes it.

here you go gambler

Whats this about Glenmorangie being a decent whisky?
I poured a glass of Glenmorangie, and another with some cheap stuff from Netto and asked a friend to judge them. He preferred the cheap stuff and so did I. Glenmorangie is pretty poor whisky in my opinion. although Im no whisky drinker. |
By:
Dr C, you don't put coke in them, you know!
By:
Try Old Pulteney. It's one of the most popular in one of the best whisky bars in Scotland - The Grill in Aberdeen.
By:
ah so the one i saw was cheap tevez?!
thanks everyone, the advice is much appreciated |

In my dads cabinet there is an unopened bottle of Red Hackle it must be 50 years old, any experts out there know if its worth a few quid ?
By:
Buy a bottle of JW Blue label
expensive, but you will be loved and honored forever .. its about the best blended you can get easily |
By:
The Macallan
By:
If McCallen, get the 18year, not the 12 year old
By:
Probably not. Was never a top of the range whisky, quite the opposite, and I don't know if it was exported outside of Scotland. I remember seeing billboard advertising for it still up around 1970.

I have cleint in Asia and have to bring 2 nottles each time for him from heathrow so he can bribe Taiwn miliary commanders with it |
By:
not really a fan of pure whisky, it tastes too nutty and odd
By:
pure cask whiskey that is about 60 percent is rancid.
I was in the "wHISKEY cONNOISSUERS CLUB" and bight bottle from it and they are all rancid upside is that it looks weak when u have poured yourself a quadruple |
By:
bought several bottles from it.. mean to type
I cant type as I have drunk two bottles of Sauv Blanc and a hot whiskey |

A good read for whisky fans is Iain Banks' book, Raw Spirit.
By:
you should include at least one form Islay - they are the smokey ones. Bowmore is a fav of mine. However, I agree that Laphroaig is particularly smokey and peaty and is an qcquired taste.
A speyside one like Glenlivet has a more mellow flavour and is a nice contrast to the above Jura is also nice Just make sure you get a variety rather than a load of similar ones imo |
By:
RR,McCallan 18yo is over £60 a bottle,although it is a superb whisky it's a wee bit expensive for a tasting night imo.
Bunnahabain is a great malt (for an Islay imo) and you would be better trying this than Laphroig imo which really is an acquired taste. 4 which I would recommend for a taster McCallan(original, not oak finish, the older the better and smoother) Tamnavulin Glenlivet(light and easy to drink) Bunnahabain(not as peaty as a typical Islay malt, very pleasant) Glengoyne(a lowland malt and very nice imo). These give you a selection from lowland, isles and speyside. |

A good read for whisky fans is Iain Banks' book, Raw Spirit. My dad loves Whiskey , its selling for £6.46p on amazon now tell me why I should buy it ? |
By:
Hearts, it's a great read.
It documents Banks' journey round the fantastic roads of Scotland in various old cars in search of the perfect dram. It's a lot more than a whisky tasting book. |
By:
I used to buy my Scottish father in law Laphroaig, put coke and ice in it just to hack him off. Can't be doing with whiskey snobs meself.
By:
Thanks for that Wur, I doubted it had much value.
