As a Scotsman living in Scotland, it's slightly embarrassing to ask, but fact is, I've seen very little of my country. Done Loch Lomond a few times, Oban, Ayrshire coast, Eyemouth to Edinburgh, Edinburgh (haven't even been in the castle) and worked in Shetland for 2 years.

Gotta be loads of chitchatters with happy memories of Scottish excursions. Folk keep telling me how great Skye is, so got that on my list.

Blair Atholl in Perthshire is stunning, spent a good few weekends there fishing and being generally on the beers, highly recommended. The former in laws are from there and the great great grandfather was the ghillie and used to organise the shooting parties at the castle.

inverary is nice. nice run down to knapdale forest from there, see the beavers. also run back up coast towards oban is excellent, through kilmartin and then on to easdale island.

Gourock is too posh. Check out Coatbridge, Airdrie and Motherwell. Maybe even Glenmavis and Cumbernauld.

The forrest of Galloway has some stunning views. The bus ride round the Isle Of Arran is more of a white knuckle ride than anything at Alton Towers, and the place is well worth a visit as it is home to the best cheese I've ever tasted.

Take the West Highland line train from Glasgow right through the middle of nowhere to up north. Fantastic scenery across parts of the country where roads have never been...

If you go to Bute, check out mansion House

It is truly jawdropping in its indulgent excesses

However if you see any funny looking characters in pubs, don't take pictures of them on your camera phone
The place is crawling with gangsters

try watching the wicker man, that was filmed in Scotland and the locals starred in the film and were told to behave as they normally would...........scary

Report BillKiller November 25, 2009 11:00 PM GMT
You go back inside the distillery, of course.
Report Perseus November 25, 2009 11:05 PM GMT
Of course.........but rocky scenery in Scotland is same as Lake district and (strangely considering the weather difference!) south east Asia
Report BillKiller November 25, 2009 11:08 PM GMT
I generally go fishing or climbing up there. Depends on the weather and the whisky. Mind you, I've got relatives all over the place. I once walked over most of Scotland, it took me four months. Hardly spent a night outside.

nt go to benbecula, trust me. its between north and south uist which are far nicer. theres an raf base on benbecula, small settlement has a spar, but the place mings. just dont go there. north uist is good as is berneray. go to rspb site on north uist, see the warden there, jimmy** he's from sunderland. south uist is nice, as is eriskay which is linked by causeway. can get ferry to barra from eriskay.
