Have Sky broadband and should be getting 8mb but been slow to load lately so just run the speed check, which showed the actual speed at just over 2mb.
Will have to phone Sky I guess but as that is usually such a painful process does anyone have any other suggestions on how to improve the speed ?

you could be waiting for upto an hour on hold with sky and then if its not answered you will have a message telling you that they will ring you back.

try connecting your router directly to your main socket jack by taking the face off and plugging into the test jack. thats wot they are going to tell you to do 1st

take the cable out of the sky box, the one they say you must have for use of the red button.
my speed went from 1.2 to 4.7mb by doing this |

i dont know abt sky, and im not a tech person, but with virgin media, the broadband speed you get at your pc/laptop is throttled at your modem. sometimes when more users in your area access the overall bandwidth (as happened recently when they cut the rates on the mid tier mb packages) this can impact everyone elses access. one of their technicians let this slip to me once when i was complaining and twice since, when my access dropped to circa 10mb (persistently) rather than 20mb ive paid for, i simply called and explained that i need the software throtting upgraded, they have done it there and then. literally its been 10mb, the guy has said hold on im just uploading, check now, and bosh, its 20mb on the next chk. They will try to scam you and say its because you have 2 laptops or are on a wireless network, blah blah, but basically, they will try to throttle you down as low as possible to maintain overall bandwith on the network. naturally i expect a techy person to totally dispute this, but, its my experience on virgin/ex-telewest

i use a proffessional broadband. my speeds are not great because i live a few miles from the exchange. i had to have my broadband speed lowered because it became unstable. they was trying to push too much speed for the line. you might find that your bandwith is shared between 50 - 100 other users. luckily mines only shared with 14 others
