Every week I am in my local I see this guy who drinks about 5-6 pints and then drives home (about 5-10 miles away). The other locals tell me he does this regularly and not just on the one night per week that I go in.

Should I shop this guy to the police? I keep thinking that he might kill someone and I would then feel guilty that I could have put a stop to it.

Absolutely yes, unless he's skill at it.

I think you are after the reward ,and asking on here for support so you don't feel guilty when you get the money .
is that it ?
Report Coachbuster November 24, 2009 10:59 AM GMT
No, not personally, unless they were drunk

This is because a good driver can be over the limit and sober , and be perfectly able to drive well .

On the other hand ,there are a lot of terrrrible sober drivers out there who shouldnt be on the road
Report Coachbuster November 24, 2009 11:00 AM GMT
another little known fact is you can be drunk and under the limit
Report Corky November 24, 2009 11:03 AM GMT
I'd get him to drop me home first
Report dk1986 November 24, 2009 11:03 AM GMT
Going by science: His five pints could easily be your two pints if he's drinking that regularly, so judging his judgement could be unfair on him.

Going by the law: he deserves locked up.

If you do decide to shop him, at least let him know first. If he stops, good. If not, then shop him.
Report Thommos_Lovechild November 24, 2009 11:06 AM GMT
Thanks dk. Good advice

He certainly isn't sober. He slurs his words and is swaying by the end of the night.
Report GASHWAN November 24, 2009 11:07 AM GMT

Report dk1986 November 24, 2009 11:14 AM GMT
Punishments for crimes imo. I'm definitely against what he's doing, but why take up already precious police time to punish someone who hasn't cost a life, or disadvantaged one through injury.

Yes he's a tw@t, but let it go if it can be gone for good.
Report Seasider. November 24, 2009 11:14 AM GMT

So is it ok to use police time after he kills someone dk ?
Report Thommos_Lovechild November 24, 2009 11:16 AM GMT
On second thoughts if he is getting drunk 4-5 nights per weeks and driving home, he isn't going to stop just because I give him a warning. Will probably just shop him. I know what car he drives and where he parks.

Have a word with him next time he's about to try it. Say that a mate/family member was killed/crippled by a drunk driver, and that you couldn't live with yourself if you allowed it to happen to someone else. Order him a cab (and pay for it) and tell him that next time he tries to drink-drive you'll call the cops to pick him up.
Report Bamboo November 24, 2009 11:19 AM GMT
yes i would without hesitation. Some guy in my local pub came back in after closing time warning all the drink drivers about the police sitting up the road.i was not happy

Report dk1986 November 24, 2009 11:25 AM GMT
Definitely not, Seasider.

But we're not there yet, and if it's 100% that he can't cause a death because he stops his habit, then leave it there. I realise that people who drink like Thommo's mate can't give up with a click of the fingers, and he probably does need shopped because he won't shop. :)

By shopping him you may be helping to take away his livelihood if he needs his car to work and provide for his family. The best thing would be to have a word a with him first and let him know there are people who are thinking of shopping him if he doesnt stop.Any idiot can go behind people's backs and shop them-we all do something wrong at one point or the other- so consider the pros and cons before rushing to adecision.

my mate decided letting all his tires down would do the trick.
when he left the pub he did not even realize all 4 tires were flat, got in and drove off lol.
last i heard he was stopped by old bill on way home.

30% of motoring accidents are caused by drunken drivers.

This means that 70% are caused by sober drivers. It looks to me as though he's a lot safer driving p1ssed.

History Maker's 12.18 post has to be the worst bit of advice ever given on here. Actually say to the bloke that if he does it again he will call the cops. Who in their right mind would do such a thing given the unhinged state of society? I appreciate the sentiment but if you did that in certain pubs not far from me you had better look to move fairly quickly.
To answer the question, I wouldn't shop the bloke personally.

A geezer from our Cricket Club got shopped a few summers back. He always had 4 or 5 pints over a 2 or 3 hour period, then drive home about 10.30pm. The police were waiting at the bottom of his road as he turned in! He was actually very close to not being over the limit he told us. Anyway, he gets done and pays the price. He knew the risk.

However, the rest of the lads at the Club were furious when we found he had been shopped by basically one of us. It took a while but eventually one of the boys found out who it was. It never ceases to amaze me how people just can't help themselves and tell people what they have done. The next season this same chap had the same thing happen to him. What made it so suprising was the original snitch had only had one pint and one Orange juice. God knows how he was over the limit. :) There was a fair degree of less anger the 2nd time around from the rest of the club.
