I'm thinking of buying a mini mac from the US as they are much cheaper and I'm trying to get a rough figure of any charges that may be forthcoming. I've looked on the hrmc and Royal mail sites and they're completely useless! I know sometimes things get through without a charge but I'm building it into the price just in case - I'm going on about 20% of the value and wandered if this was about right?
Thanks in advance

Not sure, but I got my new mac through fine. Just don't carry it through in an apple bag and you'll be reet.

I'm not actually going there I'll have to order it and my packages always seem to get checked! Do you need a power adapter/converter or just a power lead?

You should just be able to plug in the cheapo adaptor. As for getting it in, it depends what they write on the box. If you can get them to write "gift" or such like and put that value under $50, it's rare that it's stopped

Yeah - possibly, I have had stuff stopped before and about half the charges were from the PO so I'm looking at doing it legit, paying for it beforehand and if it's still less then it's prob worth it. I'll go down the PO later but I've got a feeling they'll tell me to ask customs!

add 1/3 to the purchase price. Seriously.

That's what it was on the other item I got (and a bit of research has come up with that) but that also included the PO charges which i think is a standard fee and then a % of the value as well s the % charged by customs. I don't know that it's worth it and I'll see what reductions there are on the Apple site this Friday (Black Friday) though form what I've seen they aren't that great!
