How much should I looking to spend for real top notch hear every nuance headphones? My apple ipod jobbies are just not up to the task,

Sennheiser HD280 Pro's are magnificent and smash anything under £200, at amazon they are about £80 but if you look around you should be able to get them for £65-70 ish.

Agree with brother. Even their budget range are superb and outperform alternatives costing twice as much.

sennheiser's generally don't rock though, they have a conservative sound

Decent headphones sounding conservative could be an eqing problem or more likely they aren't being driven enough by whatever they are plugged into, check the ohms brother.
