1. Theyre not worth anything ,but cost money to produce/handle
2. You cant buy anything with them
3. You cant use them in any vending machine
4. Banks dont really want them
5. They add weight to your change
6. In the 1980s they did away with half pennies, they would be worth around 2 pence today .

So why do we still keep them ?

So that places like McD's can charge something 49 or 99 for everything.
Report redbag November 17, 2009 4:53 PM GMT
its all a ruse..if people see things that cost £9.99 they think its cheaper than a tenner

people wouldnt get change and tons of stuff for sale has .99p on the end
Report Coachbuster November 17, 2009 4:55 PM GMT
study ..yeah ,but if they were discontinued these firms couldnt charge 2.99 etc.

another reason in fact to ditch them :)
Report a bitofinterest November 17, 2009 4:55 PM GMT

Report JUGADOR MEJOR November 17, 2009 4:56 PM GMT

Report captaincuttle November 17, 2009 4:57 PM GMT
So we can collect them in big empty whisky bottles.
Report Coachbuster November 17, 2009 5:00 PM GMT
get rid imo

OK ,so shops will charge 2.95 instead , but i'd sooner have a pocketful of 5 pences
Report inner city sumo November 17, 2009 5:18 PM GMT
in the old days shops went for prices that ended in a 9 so that the staff would have to open the till and give change, making it harder to rob the company.
Report captaincuttle November 17, 2009 5:21 PM GMT
In 20 years time (or less) there will be no such thing as cash. Everybody will be issued with debit cards.
Report everythings gone green November 17, 2009 5:22 PM GMT

What about a bar of chocolate that costs 32p. If there were no 2 and 1 pence coins, the price would go up to 35p,they would not reduce it to 30p.
Report ONION November 17, 2009 6:07 PM GMT
surely the time cant be far away when the metal used in making a penny is worth more than the penny itself.
People will end up selling pennies to the local blacksmith for 2p each and 2p pieces for 4p.

yeah ,but thats neither here nor there ,could go either way ...some manufacturers would want to round down

what about in 1983 when things were 12and a half pence ...did they round things up or down ?
Report munch man November 17, 2009 6:55 PM GMT
I think they should keep them because most people put them in the charity collection jars near the till. Charities would lose out if they scrapped the coppers.
Report puma November 17, 2009 7:06 PM GMT
dont know the current value of copper but a couple of years back 1/2p coins were worth 50% more than face value, if pre 1992...

There is probably something highly illegal about melting down legal tender.

It wouldn't surprise me if one of those archaic laws applied.

You may be publicly hanged, yet.
Report punterfleecer November 17, 2009 7:24 PM GMT
why are we moaning about 1p, 2p coins? who really cares? god!

if that's the best thing to moan about then we are lucky!

does it weigh down my pockets? erm no. it never has done, because 5p, 10p and 20p coins made sure of that

actually I have had my pockets annoyingly weighed down by 50p coins cos the shop never had a five pound note, still it was a rarity

the 1p and 2p coins are fine by me, only usually find 2 or 3 in my pocket at the end of each day in which I will empty them into my penny jar, to see the penny jar fill up, it's great to put it in a coinstar machine(cue the people who'll complain that coinstar take 7.99% of your money) and find there's £20!

who gives a fυck?

you petty fυckers

They smell bad too and make your hands smell if you handle them too much.

I always put them in the nearest charity box when I get them. Pointless things. We should go the same way as the Euro and have 5p/5c as the lowest denominator.
Report punterfleecer November 17, 2009 7:30 PM GMT
how is it pointless if charities are benefitting?

nah don't go down the EURO way, look how much they charge for a pint in Euroland........E4.80 in your nearest neighbours.........if it happens to be France, be thankful it's only E11 for 500ml of p!ss poor lager in some parts of Paris

Report Coachbuster November 17, 2009 7:32 PM GMT

Report punterfleecer November 17, 2009 7:39 PM GMT

Report ladycakes69 November 17, 2009 7:45 PM GMT

Report punterfleecer November 17, 2009 7:51 PM GMT

let's just leave it at 1p

I like 5 pence pieces. They are quite dainty and charming.
Report dk1986 November 18, 2009 2:12 PM GMT
We'd have to do away with 4/7- and 8/13-shots, to name but a few. Doubles trebles and accas rounded up to the nearest 5p? :D

Go through typically £1.20 a day in 1s and 2s in my shop. If the 5p became the lowest coin we'd need bags and bags of them.
Report Jimbo747 November 18, 2009 2:18 PM GMT
And if 5p became the lowest common denominator now, then**sports wouldn't be able to take a bet from most punters.
