Are they daft? Street I live in ain't bad - not an 'estate' with crime and junkies, but one of the 'less sought after' council schemes in this small town. About half the houses have been bought from the council. I see extensions, porches, mono blocked driveways, loft conversions etc being built. Buying price is around £100k for a house in this street. I can see the point of monoblocking the front garden. Gives you a personal parking space and adds value to the house withot costing the earth, but are they going to get their money back for extensions? Not savvy about property, but I just can't see how building extensions to houses in a less than average council street with £100k properties is worth the hassle.

Can be factors other than money! Maybe it's their home and they like it there?

yeah a lot do it .. but ex council houses are usually quite good cheap spacious houses to do up for yourself if you don't mind the area too much .. especially if you've got a family

they may know people in the know who can build at trade price.
