Beckham's pretty recognisable the world over.
I wouldnt recognise Bannister , Babe Ruth, Bradman, Spitz or Grace if they stood in front of me.

The list will obviously vary hugely depending whether you mean worldwide or just the uk.. most people here would recognisesomeone like rooney or ronaldo, whereas the likes of Ali would be known the world over

this list says EVER so those that are fashionable today may be forgotten in 10 years time. also it doesnt say the list is most recognised sportspersons in britain, therefore the wide spread in my list; anyone who doesnt recognise and acknowledge the achievements of those on my list cant call themselves sportsfans.

the problem with threads like this one is the information in the title - or lack of information ! a list of sportspeople recognised in the british isles will differ considerably from a list recognised in the commonwealth, which would itself differ from a list recognised in the english speaking countries worldwide, which of course will be different from an universally recognised list of top sportspeople.

Jimmy,i'm not a great fan of Beckham as a sports personality goes ...but i would have to concede hje is a great footballer .

Much the same view in Tennis with some of the greats .
