I was on until around 04.00-04.30am when my computer (laptop) just went black screen, still had power light though, switch was on. I tried to reboot but nothing happened o i unplugged it and went to bed. Turned it on this morning and the sreen came on saying windows was shut down unexpectedly etc. I booted it back up and it has been OK since then, but i am a bit worried it might have a fault. It is an acer aspire 5536 and only 3 1/2 months old.

Any ideas?

if a laptop is on top of say a bed or couch the heat build up can be ferocious INSIDE the computer, room temps are irrelevant

You can get a laptop cooler stand thingy if overheating is a problem.

Would over heating cause the problem as in my post described above?
I keep my laptop on a hard flat surface.

a graphics busy website like Betfair + high refreshing of forum makes cpu/ram work hard = a lot of heat over a few hours, that linked cooler looks a very good one

Your laptop has an AMD Athlon processor.

These are much more sensitive to overheating than Intels.

My laptop is always on same table and I have no probs but would it be worth getting a stand anyway?

I mean would it increase speed for example?

Does overheating cause long term damage or is it OK when it cools down.

Hoss, I would always get a stand if you use your laptop for more than usual periods for laptops (over 3 hours) heat causes a lot of slowdowns and errors, your laptop will last longer and work better with one

This is a few years old but it shows you the difference between AMD and Intel

try to get an aluminium one not plastic as aluminium acts as a good passive heat sink even with no fans going

Hmmm, as I knew I'd mainly be using my laptop in just the one place I went for the 20'' Vaio and they don't seem to make the fans that big. PC world have a 17'' job for what seems a cheap £30. this would only leave 1 1/2 inch overlap each end, would this suffice?
Sorry for being a pain.

Sid, that one of yours looks a nice piece of kit ;)

Hoss that will easily suffice,I use a passive aluminium one at present,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COOLERMASTER-NOTEPAL-S-SILENT-LAPTOP-NOTEBOOK-COOLER_W0QQitemZ200367546669QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL?hash=item2ea6d6212d

I got mine from play.com for £17.99 free delivery too,to be honest it really works but the back is flimsy plastic and doesnt inspire confidence for years of use
