Youve probaley got the latest version of Office and old (2003) Excel files which the new version isn't compatible with at a guess.

ROCKIN HORSE, that's done the trick for reading old excel files, cheers.
Is it possible to get excel, word etc free off the internet or does it need to be bought?

You can get what you need from the net...way I would approach it would be install a prog called UTorrent then go to a fairly well known torrent site (eg Pirate Bay) and search for what you need. Good luck.

ROCKIN HORSE I've downloaded openoffice, is it possible to transfer data from excel to create new files? By the way I would not abuse you if you posted a link to microsoft office!

OpenOffice can read Excel files, no need to transfer data from the Excel files. Just install OpenOffice and double click the file.

If all you want to do is read them (and not change them) then Microsoft supply free viewers for Word, Excel and Powerpoint. You can download them from microsoft.com.

Ah, I now see Rockin Horse has already linked to the free excel viewer.

Torrents are perfectly legal to use (but downloading copyrighted material is ..erm well you know) if looking on the internet for a torrent to download, you came upon one you liked, you would then need this safe software to download it for you (best out there imo)
http://www.utorrent.com/downloads,then you can begin searching for stuff to download at your discretion on google like............torrent
