roast shoulder of lamb (haven't had this for years)
roast potatoes (bought a 12.5kg bag for £2.00 ffs, 3.50 for a full 25kg bag from a bloke in the village)
roast parsnip (1 home grown parsnip massive it was, chopped up we got 9 good sized pieces ready for roasting. don't know why supermarkets sell them scrawny ones that you can chop into 3 roasting pieces. at a push)
cabbage, home grown cooked with butter
leeks, home grown, steamed. not my favourite veg tbh
gravy
salt

what's the rest of chitchat eating?

It's an absoloute classic, obviously don't sweeten it (maybe a tad if a very tart cooker or the like).
But Pork and Apples (pigs in orchards), gammon and pineapple, sausages and cider cream sauce, it's a no-brainer.

agree, I don't get that either, I've never liked the idea of fruit going with meat, of course don't get me wrong, I love fruit, only by itself though

there's this new fashion of having lemon or orange zest to go with meat, what's all that about? really ruins the meal

I once had a lovely bit of chicken served to me in a restaurant, only to find out it was ruined by bits of orange skin I saw on top of it!

am 29 ladycakes, but thinking about my life now.........think i should cut down on the excessive bevvying I have been doing for the past 12 years :(

Report clarkson November 15, 2009 1:49 PM GMT
You can keep your citrus fruits, although orange works well with pork and duck, but proper horseradish and mustard can really enhance a dish, mint sauce can cut through the fat in lamb and improve taste and apple sauce is the badger with a mouthful of succulent pork and a bit of a roasty.
Report punterfleecer November 15, 2009 1:49 PM GMT

Report punterfleecer November 15, 2009 1:52 PM GMT
ok to be honest with you clarkson, am not a conniseur when it comes to meat.

I live by myself at the moment and never cook proper meat for myself, it's always bird's eye chicken etc

which makes me really look forward to xmas dinner at my folks once a year

so am not the best person to talk to regarding accompaniments to meat, especially stuff like duck et al

Report punterfleecer November 15, 2009 1:59 PM GMT
a jar of bearnaise sauce.....never heard of it

as for rib-eye steak, I always order my steak rare in a gastro-pub

can I just cook it for 30 seconds on a hot pan on each side?
Report clarkson November 15, 2009 2:00 PM GMT
Yep, as simple as that, bearnaise sauce is like a hollandaise sauce with a bit of tarragon, awesome with steak.
Report punterfleecer November 15, 2009 2:01 PM GMT
how do you like your steak?
Report clarkson November 15, 2009 2:03 PM GMT
Medium rare.

Used to like it rare, but in some of the more posher gaffs they think that means cold and blue, eurgh.!!!

I would call a more posher gaff an "elite" gaff

however I have been hearing the word blue lately? what's all that about?

steak is red??

rare is best, the rarer it is, the tastier it is, that's why lions enjoy eating raw meat
Report clarkson November 15, 2009 2:07 PM GMT
Blue, is one notch below rare, that's what I was talking about, it's normally close to cold and raw, not nice.
Report punterfleecer November 15, 2009 2:09 PM GMT
I haven't tried it cold

I just had a rare steak 2 weeks ago in Dundee, it was warm enough

I've never had an extreme rare steak?

Punter you're spot on,mint ,apple, horseradish ruins the lot,who said they accompany these foods-was it in the bible?do they put strawberry jam on their *****

Many moons ago I was on a training course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. Among the many hundreds of recruits and the like were a bunch of trainees from the Nigerian Air Force. One of their number regularly got the girls serving in the mess to put a ladle full of custard over his entire dinner, whether it be fish & *****or shepherds pie or whatever. Reckon he must have had a sweet tooth.
