Cheapest place to hire a car

I have sold my car without buying one first, I need a a car to run round in for a few days whilst I decide what to buy. Any ideas where is the cheapest place to hire one from, tried Avia etc but they want £40 a day for the smallest. Serious suggestions welcome.

try local garages they sometimes have some.
Last time i was in cornwall manage to pick up a ford fiesta for 80 pounds a week

Go to renault (and I think audo/bmw) and ask for a 24 hr test drive (some do 48). Act real serious. Do it 3 or 4 times until you've decided on a car.

Or buy a banger with MOT/tax and sell at end.
