If buying a car from a used car trader, are they bound by law to give a minimum 3 month guarantee?

I don't think you can just take a car back and expect free repair for whatever happens. If you buy a car secondhand and the cambelt snaps, for instance, largely destroying the engine, then it's down to you. Pays to ask about these things before you buy.
