Firstly yes i did what most young people do and went through the phase of going out on weekends with my friends and getting as drunk as possible, but by the age of 19 i stopped.
I started to travel the world, and cutting out drinking was one way to save money, plus i started studying a lot of the eastern philosophies that talk about respecting what you put into your body etc...
So when did this type of behaviour become the norm amongst people of a certain age? I understand the need to "unwind" after a work week but why did drinking as much alcohol as possible become the means to that end? Many of my friends say they've not gone one weekend since the age of about 15 without drinking (they're now in their 30's)
I like to socialise and i like to get to know people (not on a superficial level) but most of the time when i go out im home before 10 because theres not a lot worse than being sober amongst a load of drunks talking rubbish and acting like idiots, most of the time when i speak to them the morning after they say they had a bad night, and obviously feel terrible the next day.
There are plenty of things you can do to unwind that are also far more fulfilling to you as a human being and don't leave you feeling like crap the next day, why did drinking as much alcohol as possible become the thing to do?
the lifestyle of 9-5 mon/fri then get "bladdered" on fri and sat must be the most depressing existence imaginable.
I rarely drink these days. Much happier the next day and have as much fun as anyone when im out (less frequently these days)

Ive never had a 9-5 so i think thats part of the reason it was easy for me to just stop that pattern. I think a lot of the time when your younger you go out on the weekend cos you think your going to miss something fantastic, it didn't take me long to realise that the reality is your not missing anything.
I wonder how many people could go a weekend without alcohol if they tried?

A depressing state of affairs if you consider it to be a growing 'lifestyle choice' that is on the increase.
Saying that, don't fall into the trap of thinking that everyone under the age of 25 is a binge drinking goon or some sort of intellectual pigmy compared to the glory years of 20/30/40/50 years ago. It isn't true.
There is some sort of slightly increasing binge drinking, non-aspirational, underclass type, semi-alcoholic 'I drink therefore I am' sub culture that has grown or become more acceptable imo.
You should pity them though imo

Without a doubt. The weekend rockstar's are up there with habitual marijuana smokers as among the biggest bores I've ever met in my entire life.
This thread has appeared at an apt time. I'm not long after going three months without drinking; didn't touch a drop of it and only drank water because I couldn't be bothered with the hangovers anymore. I've never felt better. It's also good to know that I could give it up altogether if I chose to and I wouldn't miss it.

Even bigger bores when they combined it with a bit of drug use, suddenly deciding that they are simultaneously a sort of international criminal mastermind/fugitive and a world renowned expert on drug qulaity and drug trafficing.
Anyway, I feel alcohol a little too much now too. I can tell if I've had even just one drink the morning after sometimes. Not good imo.

Good thread :) I've lately been feeling that there really is bugger all to do in life, I'm at uni - and the societies aren't nearly as good as I hoped for, and I have no desire to go out and get smashed. Thus I'm really struggling for a social life and I'm on betfair night after night bored out of my mind. I came to uni to get away from this boredom!
Surely there is more to life than work, drink, sleep, sex, and piddling little hobbies that are completely meaningless and don't get you anywhere?
I'm throwing in the towel and accepting there isn't, and getting a xbox 360 as my own personal means of escape :( I'm disappointed by life tbh compared to how I expected adulthood to be as a kid.

When I was a young teenager I saw lads in Vauxhall Cavalier STIs with hot women and thought "God, that must await me. I can't wait. Get in". Then I got my driving licence, knew better than to categorise myself as a Cavalier STI-driving c0ck, then also realised I wasn't the hit with the women I hoped I was going to be.
Still, just won 9p on a 9-seater poker tournament. Kettle's on.

2nd is a period trend - became more common during upswing in the economic cycle
3rd and most important. The real cost of alcohol has never been so low.
The Govt seems to be making noise about the low cost of alcohol, which is unsurprisingly coming at a time when the economic cycle is in downswing. These two conditions probably lead to an increase in low cost recreational drugs for the age defined group. Perhaps in 7 or 8 years the "pub scene" will be re invigorated again.
PS - 19 is no age to give up drinking, your career had merely begun. imho

People get smashed because basically we're emotional cripples who can't talk to others without a stimulant to open up our inhibitions. Or somethin like that.

Think this is a really good point and something ive been thinking about myself recently, its very rare to have those meaningful conversations with people where you really get to know somebody on a deeper level, most of the time its when somebody is drunk that they open up and while the level of communication isn't the greatest the topics of conversation are more interesting when somebody is drunk.
Personally these are the types of things i could talk about all the time as i don't drink anymore i feel when i do open up to somebody its more meaningful because im doing it without the aid of anything.
And yes there are things you can do to relax and unwind that will also feed your soul and leave you feeling uplifted rather than hung over.

I don't think that in fact im pretty sure this type of behaviour has been going on for hundreds of years in one form or another. My question would be why?
You look at tribes in the amazon and most of them have rituals involving some sort of alcholic beverage and drugs of some kind but at least those rituals seem to have some sort of purpose behind them.
Ive heard people say as an excuse for getting smashed on weekends "well you only live once", as if thats living.
I also don't think its a class thing, it seems that its simply the thing you do on the weekend if your a certain age, but why?

im living with a couple of 20 somethings at the moment and for the last 6 months or so have witnessed their cycle of behaviour (and their friends)
1. work hard throughout the week 2. every 2-3 weeks have a huge weekend which involves going out and drinking as much as possible 3. getting into arguments with each other while drunk and generally having a miserable night 4. spend the sunday on the sofa hungover and feeling like crap 5. vowing never to drink again 6. repeat this cycle

Birkenhead Park is a public park in the centre of Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. It was designed by Joseph Paxton and opened on 5 April 1847. It is generally acknowledged as the first publicly-funded civic park in Britain.

Lots of snobbery and assumptions on this thread. Some people seem to be making massive assumptions about people, based on something they dont understand. I for one am 27 and yes I used to like going out and getting drunk a lot, often for no reason other than 'because I can' this was mainly at uni and for the first year I moved away from the UK when i was 23/24. I dont drink that often these days, but that isnt to say that I dont like a drinka nd getting drunk now and then. For example I spent the last few weeks looking forward to this saturday just passed. I knew I'd be spending the day with good friends, watching top class sport (apart from Eng!) all day and getting drunk. Thats exactly what happened, and we had a great laugh. Alcohol releases inhibitions so its natural we 'use' it. Nothing wrong with wanting to be more social. Unfortunately there is a small % of yobs and morons who cant handle their alcohol and end up causing civil unrest and what not that blights the image of all weekend drinkers.
As to the comment about habitual canabis smokers being a bore, I suspect that whomever said that had a very small sample on which to base that opinion. Now I am not advocating it as cool or the thing to do or anything. But I happen to know many many people who smoke regularly and whilst some may be boring others lead perfectly normal lives with hobbies, interests jobs etc.
It would appear that these conversations can never be had with out wild sterotyping and what not. Never trust a man who doesnt drink ;-)

you see thats the thing, it doesn't always make you act like a moron, in most cases you're just louder and more social. As long as you dont go vomiting on the streets and starting fights then its all gravy imo.

louder and more social...i would associate with being merry........thats ok....drunks walking in the road thinking they are immune to injury;and making people step aside when they are paralectic drunk ...i find irritating.

I shared a flat with two friends in the early 80s and considered it one of the best times, we were all racing mad, liked to go out around 4 nights a week and probably only got really ratarsed really every other weekend, we would have endless fun discussing Horses. girls, football and all kinds of banal things.
There is plenty of time in life to be really deep, and imo when you are 20 odd you aint, you're pretentious, have very little experience of life and most of the time you are trying to get in some girls knickers when you put it on. Enjoy life as you are going to be old for a lot longer than you are young.

In 1750 William Hogarth depicted the evils on drinking in his works Beer Street and Gin Lane. Would make a cracking film.
Our love of booze is the one thing which prevented revolution in this country imo.

It was me who said it, and trust me, my opinion wasn't based on 'a very small sample'. I hung around with a lot of stoners for years. Obviously, you'll have some who have hobbies and interesting jobs, but for the most part (in my experience based on the people I've have known) the majority of their activities are based around getting stoned and sleeping. The people I've known, everything they did was in relation to getting high. They wouldn't go out unless they could stand outside the pub and get high; they wouldn't go to parties unless they knew they could get a smoke at it. It was the nucleus of their social life. If you ever did get a conversation out of them, it would normally find a way of entering into a discussion on the legality of marijuana; these wee hard done by souls fighting their petty rebellion, trotting out tired and trite arguments for it, complaining about it not being legal and their human rights being impinged on while...while they stood and smoked a joint. As I said: boring. .

I do have more interesting friends, it was just a case of seperating the wheat from the chaff.
It is an interesting debate to an extent. Where it kinda falls down though, is when you have stoners surreptitiously comparing it to some of the great human rights atrocities of the world, or talking about things which they have a limited knowledge of and passing it off as if they've thoroughly researched it. Additionally, it's hardly as if it being illegal has any bearing on the people who smoke it anyway; it's legality has never stopped a stoner from smoking.
For what it's worth, I would like it to be legalised but for very different reasons than the ridiculous standpoint of a stoner complaining about not being able to smoke marijuana whilst smoking mariuana.

Yes absolutely, I agree whole heartedly. Somewhat like illegal downloads and stuff. I have over 700 Gigs of films tv series' etc on my hard drive and the fact its illegal is neither here nor there. Perhaps a slightly dubious comparison.
For the record I would legalize it also.
