I'm doing a module on the French Revolution and have been asked to analyse a passage of text about 'what is a sans-culotte'. (anonymous piece written in 1793)

I don't want to end up answering to the wrong q as that'll waste time and lose marks, lol, so what exactly is this part of the q asking do you think?

' Locate the course concisely in the context of the French Revolution'

Is it asking me to talk about what was happening at the time the passage was written? But if I do that ,I'm not sticking to analysing the passage ,which is what I thought was the exercise.

Trying to learn at my age..what a numtpy :D

Perhaps it's asking you to analyse the passage from the perspective of what we know about the movement now, as opposed to what the author of the article was writing at the time.
Only a guess mind, it's been a while for me too.

That should be 'locate the source concisely in the context of the French Rev'
Accuracy is quite important ,lol!

Ah-ha, LOL indeed. Well, since the piece is anonymous, then it seems to me that what is required of you is to indentify whether the source is sympathetic or not to the S-C and from that make some assumptions about the type of person (socio-geographical background for example) that they are.
What the question is asking in a roundabout way is; Who do the S-C appeal/ not appeal to.

Not really my period Brodie.. but I find it helps if you look again at the question.. if necessary over and over before attempting an answer. If I remember correctly the term was used as a snobbish description of French Revolutionary Soldiers.. which probably means you are being asked to comment on attitudes prevailing at the time. Ask yourself who coined the phrase, who used it and why? Then perhaps bearing in mind you have specifically been asked to confine your answer to within a limited period, a comment on the irony or at the very least, the incongruity of such a 'bourgeois' term being sneeringly applied to the very people without whom the 'peoples revolution' could not and would not have taken place.

Perhaps a conclussion based on 'Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose'? (Excuse my spelling!)

Whatever you decide, the very best of luck.. and most important of all., enjoy it! :)

Sans culotte means "No trousers", so I think you're being asked to do your essay in your underpants.
