i dont smoke but all the smokers at our work (a massive building) used ot gather in the court yard which is outside in the middle of the whole building complex ,, an email has gone around saying they arnt aloud to smoke there anymore even tho it is outside they have to go to the outer of the building and teh email went on to say not only did they have to be outside the building but were not allowed to smoke within 10 metres of the building,, which i thought was a nice touch just to p1ss them off even more.

Yep, went to Blackpool for the weekend and today one of the pubs there were defying it and everyone in there was smoking. News cameras were there covering it, was on Sky and BBC so I was told, no one was fined. Landlord says he will carry on doing it, surely they will just fine him daily and take away his license?

I went to a pub this afternoon; the pub is normally busy , mainly men, average age about 60 I guess. It was dead, only two other customers apart from us. The barmaid said it had ben the same all day but they were hoping things would improve once they got their awnings sorted in a week or two.
How can people gloat over this ban? Don;t they realise that a lot of people enjoy smoking and that if they can't smoke in the pub anymore they just won't go? It makes me sad to think of lonely older smokers being socially ostracised in this way just because they have such an entrenched habit developed in their youth when smoking was promoted as glamorous, cool and even possibly healthy activity. Gloaters should be ashamed of themselves

is it not sad that 60 year olds only have smoking in their life so they cant even leave the house ,, maybe a smoking ban will stop people smoking ,, make it less "cool" ,, help stop youngsters starting and they dont become sad old men whose lives revolve around having a cigarette inside a pub.

They won't go to the pub if they can't smoke as smoking for them is so entrenched that their enjoyment will be severely compromised if they can't indulge. The smoking ban may help stop young people starting to smoke, it may cut down on the health risks associated with smoking but it won't prevent loneliness and this ban certainly won't.

Don't be daft obviously smokers go to the pub for the same reasons as non smokers, anti smokers maybe are a bit different . Smoking is part of the pub experience for a smoker.

well thats my point , they dont just go for the smoking , so when trhe dust has settled ,, they will return , maybe not as many but it cant be a bad thing that people cut down on smoking and drinking

I hope being a non-smoker is different to an anti-smoker. I don't smoke not bothered if other people do.
I went to pub today and saw people having to go outside for a ciggie, did, I wondered if they felt self-concious having to sit outside?

City centre bars and tourist places will be fine local pubs and social clubs will go to the wall.
Average local might have 30 people on a midweek. If each customer has 6 drinks and spends 15 then thats 450. 20 smokers stop going, Mr Landlord now making 150. He still has same wagebill, overheads, rent etc so whats he going to do
Put prices up ? You then get a few non smokers that never really went to the pub much but now go because they think it will be smoke free and they say sod paying that and call into Sainsburys for their vino.
Local pubs wont stay afloat on people meeting there on a weekend before they hit the town centre.

No, it won't make that much difference in the long run. The fact is that the majority of smokers actually want to quit and are in favour of a ban that helps them. Smokers will still visit pubs and clubs, they will just smoke outside. Landlords need to be proactive rather than reactive - set up outdoor smoking areas with shelter from the rain.
A minority of smokers will stop going out but that should be compensated by the non-smokers that start to.

Well you seemed to have settled that issue pretty easily islander. Excellent work. Perhaps you can now solve the NHS crisis and then move on to the law & order problem.

It is not foresight, it is the experience of living in a place where the ban has existed for over a year. I wouldn't try to solve the NHS problem except perhaps refusing free treatment to smoking related problems!

, has said on here earlier that the pub was empty, i live in wales and the pubs/clubs have gone quieter(fact), once people start staying in they will get used to it , i used to go out at least 4 times a week before the ban, now it dont worry me if i go out at all (fact), for all those that said that the ban wont have no affect on the pubs/clubs think again and get a life you are living in a fantasy world. has said earlier for the pubs/clubs to survive prices will have to go up or some will shut down, there is one club in my village thats on the brink of closing down and that club is a ex-service mens club, they fought for this country and thats wot they get in return from this government and the anti -smoking brigade , ( lets ban all smokers from join the forces in peace or war time and leave it up to the non-smokers to defend this country).
