Are you using Vista? With Flash playing, check 'volume control' - applications have a separate volume control, that may have been lowered.
As for the eject, does eject work when you do it from within wndows explorer / my computer?

swearbox you've nailed it my son - but as I'm a bit 'novicey' how do I unistall Adobe Flash and update with the latest version or am I best calling Dell in the morning

My vista machine is off at the moment so doing this from memory...
Load up youtube, click on any video.
Once done, right click on volume icon at bottom right and choose open volume control
In there will be several sliders, make sure they are all dragged up to the max.
If that looks ok, then we'll try something different.

Jimbo I think the above link has nailed it mate - they all had the same problem pal. Apparently have to uninstall Adobe and update - but I'm not sure how you do it :(

If you want to reinstall flash player first, then go to control panel. then look for 'uninstall a program' or 'add /remove programs'
In the list will be adobe flash player plugin / active x.
Remove both references by clicking on it and then 'remove / uninstall'
Once done, go to www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer
