My East End - Gilda O'Neill

I picked this up new from a charity shop for £1, put it on the "to read" pile, flicked through it and found myself reading it enthusiastically.
A brief history of the East End (did you know that Somalians first arrived in the 19th century?), but largely an anecdotal story told of the area from around the turn of the century through personal accounts. Stronger the closer you get to the pre-war and post- war era. Fascinating tales and reminiscences.

The Old Wives' Tale - Arnold Bennett I "did" this for A level English, but never read it. The course note digest(can't remember the name) was sufficient for the exam. However, I picked up a copy in that cheap book shop by Waterloo station next door to Coral's where you can get 3 classics for £5, and thoroughly enjoyed it. As you doubtless know, it's set in the Five Towns, the forerunner of Stoke before it was invented, with the sisters Sophia and Constance raised in Bursley. "This study of the changes wrought by time on the lives of two English sisters during the 19th century is a masterpiece of literary realism. Constance and Sophia Baines, the daughters of a shopkeeper, grow up in the rural town of Bursley. Sophia eventually runs off and settles in Paris with her husband, who is a cad, and Constance remains behind in England and marries the mild-mannered shop assistant. The sisters are reunited years later when they are old, and Bennett skillfully contrasts what has remained stable in their characters with the differences time and environment have produced in their personalities. The problem with this thread is that very few forumites read regularly, I guess, and many don't pick up on the nuances of the characters posting, so it goes in the "too hard for a reply" category. |
