Open Office is freeware and will open any word files.

The 2007 version is awful.

If you just want to read the docs, your best bet is the Microsoft's free Word viewer.

If you have a child at school or are a student yourself you can buy the whole offie package (WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT) on software4students for about £35 which is very cheap.

Round here an offie package is a case of beer.
