Just been listening to some of their stuff and i'd forgot what a brilliant but short lived career they had.Welcome to The Pleasuredome a superb album with the singles Relax and Two Tribes the brilliant title track and corking cover of Born to Run.Of course it was all over produced Trevor Horn fantasy but all the better for it if you ask me.
id have been about 16/17 at the time,they were hugely influential on music and the fashion thing for the time.
Also you have the quite amazing The Power of Love,talk about an achingly beautiful song.There's a link to it at the bottom with Johnson singing note perfect on Jools Hollands show a few years back.

Black Night White Light is top track off that album.
Holly did do the relax re-mix which has been around afew months.
He's looking good as well seen as he's had HIV for about 15 yrs.I think he had far too mnay legal wrangles to get back and sing with the band as he'd have to pay the record company oodles of cash or suchlike.

Relax is an all-time classic & the album was a bit of a triumph too - a doubler in fantastic packaging. Bit like De La Soul's debut inasmuch as they used up every last morsel of creativity in their first LP. Holly Johnson = superb frontman. Three consecutive number one singles back in the day when it actually meant something.
Isn't the rumour that the rest of the band didn't play a note on Relax?

HRH that's right about "Relax"..but only on the final mix.
Trevor Horn spent months playing around with the mixes before he finally settled on that one.
the missing link was the famous scream "HEEEEEUUUUUUUURGH" by Holly and Paul at the end of the track.
he gave them some money and sent them off to a gay club for the night...they both staggered
back to the studois at 4am,grabbed the microphone and hey presto..
...the final piece in the jigsaw and an etenal classic was completed :)

They are in a Brian de Palma film called Body Double. Saw the film many moons ago and I am sure it is the video for relax
Some cracking posts here..not many bands with such a short stint in the spotlight could still be talked about for such great songs.
Relax is a timeless song,it could be released in 2009 and it would fit right in.Even the best songs are often hideously dated but this drunken underground gay anthem has stood the test of time.

i've been listening to pop music since 1971 and am still hooked.
but when i heard the 12" version of "Two Tribes" in 1984 , i'd never heard a sound so far ahead
of everything else at the same time.
it's 25 years ago now..but it still sounds well 'ard to me :)

Relax was the first single I ever bought, all the FGTH stuff has aged well.

I've still got the cassette singles of the four singles taken from the first album. FGTH,Art of Noise and Propaganda were all on the same label,all produced by Trevor Horn. Their songs all sounded fantastic played really loud.
Everyone posting on this fred prior to me can make up a team to bat for the other side... :^0

Anubis - there was a great ZTT compilation tape back in the day which featured some fantastic songs. Propaganda still 'do it' for me now tbh - P Machinery & Duel are marvellous pop tunes.
especially Claudia Brucken's co - singer - the ultimate german ice woman :x
Only a few performances stand out from Jools Hollands programme, one was Sam Brown that I cant remember, the other Holly Johnsons as above
Every single Party I've been to in a Club or Hotel (wedding , birthday, etc) I've asked the DJ to play RELAX ..at least 5 this year ...
I am amazed that I am not alone in remembering a great song , a great band and also a band who produced so many other good songs ..

Trevor Horn soon realised The Frankies were never competent enough as musicians, so he employed a band who were.
He also gave it the pounding beat, and other memorable sound effects.
If ever a producer was responsible for creating a hit record out of a mediocre concept, this is it.

Holly Johnson's performance on the Jools Holland show was absolutely phenomenal.
