Comedian Jimmy Carr has promised to raise money for a charity which supports wounded servicemen after causing uproar by making a sick joke about troops who have lost their limbs on the front line.

He stunned an audience of 2,500 at the Manchester Apollo when he said: 'Say what you like about these servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, but we are going to have a f****** good Paralympic team in 2012.'

There was said to be 'some laughter' but most in the audience on Friday's show were stunned into silence.

In an effort to make amends he has since pledged to take part in a fundraiser for the Help for Heroes charity, The Sun reported.

As a ex-squddie I would and did laugh at that joke, most of my m8's thought it was funny however once again we bow to "pc britain".

feck off he was not being nasty,he was seeing the humourous side of adversity,something that the armed forces do on a regular basis.

Surely you tell jokes to make the audience laugh, what he said would be as funny as cancer to 99% of the population, so unless the audience was vetted beforehand to only let in sick minded individuals what did he really expect.

I listened to a radio show a fortnight ago where a ex-squaddie who had lost his legs in Ireland phoned up and basically said the same as myself, it was funny.

You know why I will tell you why because it made him feel normal, who wants to feel as though everybody pitys them?

Carr was not trying to be malicous,he was trying to see the funny side off adversity and imo long live his type.

He's on J.Ross show at 10-35. Would be a bad interview if Ross didn't bring up his recent remarks !

There's bundles of stuff all over the news recently about "our brave troops", why has this not been news for the last 5 years?
They've been brave, and fighting and being killed for at least this long, but the media (and politicians) didn't fell the need until smokescreens - obscuring MP's expenses and bankers bonuses - were needed. Yet again the GB public, sheeplike, flock to a cause, and take on a war-time attitude because they're being bombarded (no pun intended) with news about it.

Didn't offend me at all tbh - I've never been bombed. I obviously mis-judged/underestimated the average soldier's ability to stiff upper lip it after getting blown to fck. Still think Carr's overstayed his TV welcome, however. One trick pony who lacks the necessary charisma/spontaneity to be a 'great' comedian.

One of the most cheering events of the year,tbh. Fair play to Carr, but the real hero's are the troops he supports.

If a joke is told about race, rape, soldier, grannys etc... the over the top crackerjack brigade are out.

A joke is what it is, it starts a joke and ends a joke. People dont walk around believing that the joke is reality and when people think its too risque they might be judging it too close to reality IMO

if you cant leave a joke afterwards for what it was intended then really jokes are not for you or you`ll be thinking kangaroos really will be wearing wooly jumpers if you cross them with a sheep.

Soldiers aren't easily offended. Short of kit, short of money, short of patience with lefties, yes. Short of humour, no.

Fair play Hearts - the voice of sense and reason - and yet still you get the PC nobs arguing that soldiers will be offended by it even when you are telling them they/you are not. These brave men who put their lives on the line to keep the rest of us safe are worth a million of these idiots whose bravest act in life is to berate a comedian for - well for being a comedian. I despair i really do.

The level of concern & indignation, about the casualties in Afghanistan, portrayed in the media is very misleading, imo. I know very few people who care about soldiers dying or being wounded in this futile campaign. It's sad, and probably isn't right, but it's true.
