Ori, I have it on the reliable information from my youngest daughter, that Seven Nation Army by White Stripes is the song all beginners can master with comparative ease.

Won't that just be a noise? I like the White Stripes, but I'm looking for something a bit more, well ... This needs to be an acoustic masterpiece, Nest. Not Segoviaesque, but beyond electric thrash.

O, I really have no idea about such things, not being able to play the guitar myself, but I do remember that as a small child a neighbour friend's brother set up 'a group' and whenever I went around there they were always playing 'Norwegan Wood' in the kitchen.

As they were only about 13-15 years old at the time, I would think it was because it was easy to play on the guitar?

I've been showing a mate how to play the geetar recently. What I've noticed with him, and other beginners is;
a, He doesn't bend his left wrist enough - You need to get the TIPS of the fingers pressing the strings. Don't worry too much, the skin will harden a bit and the sore feeling will ease, but it's easier to make the chords than just folding your fingers round the fretboard.

b, He concentrates too much on getting the strumming right (as on the page he's reading), just strum more or less in time to a "basic beat" in your head, which accompanies the song you're playing, the nuances of strumming will follow.

c, He, like nearly all beginner - and some more accomplished - musicians, tends to go a bit fast.
Go slowly - even ridiculously slowly, until your confidence builds. The faster stuff will be easier that way. Try and maintain the same tempo throughout whatever you play, many people end a song playing twice as fast as they started it.

Tried to teach my niece Study, she can't hold the guitar properly, and she's cack-handed. I gave up after 30 minutes.

there is an endless list of songs you can play quite easily once you hold down strings properly, as Study says, with your fingertips.

And again as he says, and my old sensei said the same many years ago: 'Never sacrifice technique for speed.'

If you forget the long 'picking' intro to Hotel California, which you ain't ready for yet, the chord sequence itself is pretty easy, even though there are 7 or 8 chords in it.

Unless you're playing something pretty unusual, all songs come in chord sequences, thousands with 3 chords, same with 4 chords.

Learn a sequence, then shove a groups name iinto Google wiith the word 'chords', hit search, and Bobs your aunts husband.

How old is your niece, Charlie? Mine is seven and she's playing Horse With No Name. My nephew who is six can chew out Lay Lady Lay but he's had to stop because my sister says it's 'unsuitable'.

Anyway, he's going to be a boxer, he says. I laugh at him but with his shoulders and my sister's temper (if he controls it) I won't be laughing in ten year's time.

A challenge has been set. I need to play a recognisable song on the guitar (and sing along) by Christmas.

My niece is 15, and her best friend, Lauren, was given an electric guitar for her birthday. Laurens brother plays, so he taught her a few 'power chords' and how to hold it properly. She can now smash out some songs and can also jump up and down while doing it, which is apparently compulsory if you're between 13 and 19. :^0

Niece, however, is cack-handed, like me. But I was taught by a right hander and found it easy. She can't grip the guitar properly, and moans that it hurts her fingers. I tried simple chords like E minor but she even has trouble holding down the 4th and 5th strings without blocking the 3rd string, because, as Study pointed out, she won't bend her wrist.

'Lauren doesn't do that.' is all I get when I ask her to bend her wrist.

She's not pounding my electric guitar, so I told her to let Lauren teach her. :)

The key is bringing your left hand in cleanly ( assuming you are indeed right handed).
Best tip I read on this was put a credit card on a table. Now pick it up with your left hand. THAT is the shape you need to transfer to the fretboard.
I could teach you to play Michael Rowed the Boat in about 10 minutes. Easily win your bet. Another good tip above was don't get too caught up with the strumming. Just do it. It will come out ok in the end and will be intuitive. Too many people look at their right hand instead of their left.

Bloody hell Orioles, that's a lot of horrid F chords in there. Make sure you take the easy way out and barre the 1st fret and play an E shape. F played at the first fret is a killer for anyone.

Ther only bar he knows is where he gets a Babycham.

Despite some excellent advice on this thread (and quite a lot of practice) I didn't do justice to the song. I'd played it a few times no problem-ish, but on the big day, when I struggled, I whistled or hummed the part.

The crowd thought it was hilarious, but I was crushed - and several good bottles of wine down. The forfeit will remain a secret.
