I have a 5 yr old laptop getting abit slow...the laptop, not me :)

It came with 500mb X 2 RAM

I decided to speed it up and bought a 2gb Ram chip and replaced one of the 555mb with it

Then on a scan of laptop, was informed capabilities of latop was 2gb MAX

Is this right??
Do I need to take out the 500mb chip??
Will this affect the speed as I will lose dual core??

tyia for any help

Danse

Go to crucial.com and enter your laptop's details. It will tell you if the memory needs to be in pairs etc.

Right.

IMO, the shared graphics has set itself to use 512mb ram leaving 2gb.

I'm assuming you have windows XP - it didn't give correct readout on memory reading until service pack 3 from memory.

You may be able to adjust the memory used by the onboard chipset in the bios, or it may be configured automatically by windows depending on installed memory.

TBH, you won't notice any difference in speed on a 5 yr old laptop running XP between 2gb and 2.5gb (minus amount used by gfx chipset).

The only issue you may have, is it may not run in dual memory configuration (assuming it had that capability) as I'm sure they need to be installed in matched pairs for that to work, so depending on what apps you are running, you may not notice a huge difference in speed.
