Gordon Brown has now came out today and told The Commons it was the Taliban who shot the five of them, when it was thought that it was just a 'rogue' Afghan policeman who carried out the act.

I didn't see PM Questions, but did he happen to give any evidence as to it being the Taliban? I'm only going on the BBC reports and it doesn't look to be conclusive at all, and comes across as Brown using this as a way to continue to keep troops in Afghanistan to fight the faceless Taliban enemy.

Give the Taliban ASBOs and pull the troops out, problem solved imo.

I'm just wondering if anyone quizzed him on it. The BBC report reads as if he just said that the Taliban had taken responsibility for it and everyone accepted that as fact.

Well we don't know!! Maybe a couple were having a snooze. Bit unfair to speculate on the ability recently murdered servicemen to defend themselves!

it's quite simple... pull all the troops out .... then drop an atomic bomb on the whole lot of them

Fair enough kf, the details are scarce. I can see how it would be difficult for one man to kill four armed men standing facing him at a checkpoint, so I doubt those are the circumstances.

Well, he probably just stood behind them and opened up. Simple. They'd have been riddled before they knew what was happening.

kingfisher 23 - I dont want to get in an argument about it, but its pretty understandable how he could get away with it.

A dozen squaddies sitting around scratching their rses getting shot at by a "friendly" wouldn't have known what hit them.

wont fire that many because you could not load 2 full mags on in that time

Of course it does beg the question should they have all been sitting around. I dont trust them and wouldn't. Id always have a couple of blokes "locked and loaded"

Did you read the report referenced above?

The British soldiers had laid down weapons and removed their helmets and body armour as proof of their trust in their hosts, local officials in the village of Shin Kalay, Nad-e'Ali district.

The gunman - named only as Gulbuddin - had climbed on to a roof before peppering the courtyard of the compound below with bullets

I'm not going to say what soldiers should have done, but if that was me, in a war zone, I wouldn't trust anybody further than I could spit.
