Best Mate won the Gold Cup for the first time, on my first visit to Cheltenham. Didnt back him though, but still have good memories.

I'd forgotten how weak the gold cup field was that year.

The placed horses in his 3 gold cups

Sir Rembrandt
Harbour pilot

Truckers tavern
Harbour pilot

Comanche court
See more business

See more business aside it would be hard to imagine any slower horses have ever filled the places in the gold cup I’m sure there might be the odd one but those were paceless.

See More Business was strutting his stuff @13.

Yeah every Gold Cup doesnt have an Arkle, Mill House or Kauto, Denman showdown.

Kauto beat Exotic Dancer over and over again. Istabraq beat his inferior mate into second every time it didnt make him weak.

Eric

I wasn’t trying to knock best mate he did what he needed to do and in style

Regarding exotic dancer I think he was one of the best horse to run in a gold cup without winning one
By:

When: 22 Feb 23 20:24
jimnast yes i realised that. Exotic was good however there have been many like him over the years imo.

You can’t always beat a great to become a great. The probabilities are that only one great exists at any one time they may not have a near rival but they are still great. Quite rare to get two greats at the same time but we have seen it in recent years. Moscow, Azertyuiop and Well Chief spring to mind.

It didn’t need El Gran Senor to meet Chief Singer, Lear Fan and Rainbow Quest to see he was great. Frankel proved that.

Some greats mentioned in that paragraph eric I’m still waiting for el gran senor to go by secreto I’m sure one day he will.

Yeah deffo that was a big upset. Another memory brought back of the great Pat Eddery rip. If you are into racing you do store up great memories it is a benefit of being a racing enthusiast. Take care mate and enjoy Cheltenham :)

Yes Eric been an enthusiast has many benefits and many memories it’s a fantastic sport, only missed 5 days at the festival since 1980 excluding the covid year,I have to be honest and say I’m not up for it this year at the moment and just get a feeling this may be it for me,not just the way the races are now the cost of everything involved and the hassle just doesn’t seem worth it.

You take care Eric and the best of luck.

Never say never jimnast it’s always there if you want to go back and sample the atmosphere and see the greats again in future.

vautour and douvan were brilliant at cheltenham and annie power was different gravy when she broke the champion hurdle record

For one single performance then it has to be Masterminded's first Champion Chase.

Exceptional round of jumping over the minimum trip.

Just a bit suspicious about that performance Duffy all the horse were delayed 24 hours some might have handled it better than others, probably wrong but just a thought I have had as it was in a way a freak performance

Racing is full of freak performances when a horse gets it all right on one day. Hawk Wing being the most freaky example. I would not include Masterminded among the suspicious ones as he was very good on other occasions but Hawk Wing in the Lockinge was very odd.

must have been ryanir but backed IMPEK and he went from looking like  dotting up to been a beaten horse in a couple of strides

I thought Mastermind overjumped at times, he pinged everyone it seemed but was high at most of them. Douvan on the other hand went through them like Denman , clipping the top .

Edredon Bleu was also very good on his day.

Over the course of his career Matey saw off proper G1 horses like Marlborough, Beef Or Salmon (in Ireland), Florida Pearl.
The third Gold Cup was not a great race and he was arguably a little lucky to win but not all Gold Cups are good races.
Hen changed the way horses are trained with the way she plotted BM on his way to 3 GCs.
Dont forget there hadnt been a repeat winner of the GC since L'Escargot in the 70s. She pointed the way for Paul Nic and Willie M.
Her less is more approach upset a lot of pundits which is probably why BM never got the credit he deserved.

Is that Billy Craig's horse he seen off or did he just see his backside when Carberry was waving him to come on
By:

Correct Tarps.

She was given a lot of grief from the media how she "wrapped" him up. But it is how they all train now.

This fashion for running the best horses only 3 or 4 times is mainly due to the ridiculous prize money for the top few races compared to a good Saturday handicap. You need to win 15 big handicap chases to equal the Gold Cup. If you wait for the GC and only finish fifth it is not quite so clever.

RIP Jim Lewis and thanks for the fantastic memories with Hen, Terry and Jim!
