As we draw near the festival on a day with no jump racing people begin to think about the festival, and rightly so.  I'm sat here thinking about altior and other things.  I would like you to join me and help us remember festival bankers that got beat.  off the top of my head

Mole Board hurt! My best ever ante post lay was Kauto Star, Well Chief and Moscow Flyer in Newmill's Champion Chase. It was around 1/20 that one of those 3 would win. KS fell, Moscow only fifth and Well Chief a non runner.

Report sageform January 25, 2019 9:15 AM GMT
I probably would not have laid Kauto in isolation although in his 2 mile days he was nowhere near as reliable as he was over 3 miles later. As I said my liability was something like 1 point loss, 20 points profit after laying all three. The only sort of ante post laying I get involved with. Kauto fell early, Moscow got badly hampered and Well Chief didn't run so I enjoyed the second half of the race knowing I had won what ever happened. I'm sure most of the bookmakers felt the same.

Sybillin. As a novice he thrashed Deep Sensation ten lengths getting a pound in the Victor Chandler. Deep Sensation went on to win that season's Queen Mother, yet odds-on Sybillin was thrashed 21 lengths by Travado in the Arkle Whoops
The horse knew how to rub it in as he beat Travado and Deep Sensation in the next season's Tingle Creek.

I remember queuing for ages to get paid out on Rhinestone Cowboy, certain the Stewards would throw out Spencer having seen the head on. It was like being hit with a baseball bat when they announced the outcome of the enquiry. I suppose Spencer would call it a successful professional foul. I read he got away with one on Hayley Turner as well.

I am going to say that there has never been more debate (even Brexit) than there was to the virtues or lack of for Black Jack Ketchum before the Stayers hurdle. Fell 1st, no-one was right lol.

And when I look at bankers I'm looking for the real bomb proof ones on paper added in every double or treble before the race.....

Rooster Booster & Annie Power (in the mares) are probably the tops.

Granville Again was thought a certainty for the Supreme in the early 90’s. Was beaten there and fell in the following years Champion.
Won the following year with a great ride from Peter Scu.
Report foxy April 13, 2020 12:00 PM BST
I think the winner of the supreme novice hurdle that year was also considered a certainty by connections.
Report foxy April 13, 2020 12:03 PM BST
The result of the opener in 91 made the illiad in the champion hurdle a ridiculous price generally 33/1 in the build up to Cheltenham was on offer around 5/1 before the off due to liabilities.
Report Hibore April 13, 2020 12:20 PM BST
I do remember that fox. Granville was badly bumped a few times in a rough Supreme if I remember and would have gone close with a clearer run. He was also cruising when falling behind Royal Gait in the Champion. He deserved a big one the following year as he was high class at his best.

What happened to Desterio ? Was he injured because his form fell away....
Report foxy April 13, 2020 1:00 PM BST
He didn’t run again till punchestown in November 18 months later where he won a listed hurdle,he then ran at leopardstown over Christmas 13 months later where he was 4 th behind fortune and fame, royal derby 3 rd,then 5 th in the Irish champion hurdle again behind fortune and fame ,Granville again 4 th,then 11 th in alderbrooks champion hurdle, his final run was down the field in the 96 Irish champion hurdle won by Collier bay.
Report sageform April 14, 2020 6:26 PM BST
Collier Bay was not a banker but he was unlucky when getting a minor problem the day before the Triumph which was won by Mysilv. Subsequent events suggest he would have won it in a canter. His non run cost me a lot but we got it back 2 years later.
Report foxy April 14, 2020 6:37 PM BST
Won it in a canter not sure about that sageform mysilv was no mug .
Report sageform April 16, 2020 12:07 PM BST
He beat Mysilv about 15 lengths in the CH. It might have been closer at 4yo I suppose but CB was a decent class flat horse. Jim made one of his rare bad calls by going for the Coral Cup with Collier Bay as a 5yo. He was not beaten over 2 miles until the 1997 CH when he was pulled up on fast ground which he hated.

Yes irishone ran twice at auteuil 2nd both times the last been 29th June 96 the day before Germany beat Czech Republic on the golden goal rule in the final of Euro 96 ,the horse never ran again.
Report sageform April 22, 2020 8:46 AM BST
If it was a practice they didn't tell Jamie Osborne. He had ridden Collier Bay to win the Irish CH and still chose Mysilv in the CH itself. I had horses with Jim Old through that period and he was very confident of winning that Triumph despite learning pessimism from Capt. Forster.
Report foxy April 22, 2020 10:54 AM BST
Did mole board spend any time with Jim old sageform?
Report sageform April 22, 2020 8:43 PM BST
Yes a couple of years after Wally Sturt bought him from Owen O'Neill's stable. He had fallen at the last in the Supreme when having every chance. He was actually favourite to beat Collier Bay giving him a lot of weight in the Bonusprint Handicap at Sandown with Oh So Risky and Absaloms Lady in the field. That was Collier Bay's first run as a 6yo. He won easily at 25/1 and then won the Irish and Cheltenham Champion hurdles. CB needed soft ground and was never as good again. He was tried over fences but was much too free and I well remember him running away with Graham Bradley on the downhill stretch at Towcester.
Report foxy April 22, 2020 8:56 PM BST
Owen O’Neil peaced  up a nice double late 80s I think it was New Year’s Day ,one of the horses involved was mole board winnng at Cheltenham can’t remember the other one, mole board himself was a well backed favourite in the sun alliance hurdle he ran well to finish around 4 th at many festivals including in champion hurdles he was always thereabouts at the last.
Report sageform April 22, 2020 9:11 PM BST
Yes, could have been the Sun Alliance. He was an unlucky horse really, as you say often close up in big races. We finally had a big pay day when at the end of his career, he ran at Sandown in a conditions race and was allowed to start at a huge price (33 or 50) He set off in front and nothing got near him. I remember that Sun Alliance now, I backed Mole Board who was fourth and a horse trained by David Elsworth that was coming with a wet sail but fell at the last. The best horses I had shares in with Jim were Meister who won 6 races in the 1980's including the Bristol Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham December meeting and Jefferies in the late 1990s who won 5 including all of his 4 runs at Taunton.
Report foxy April 22, 2020 9:16 PM BST

Report foxy April 22, 2020 9:22 PM BST

Report foxy April 22, 2020 9:25 PM BST
He even won aged 14 at ascot what a horse .
Report sageform April 22, 2020 9:30 PM BST
He beat Gala's Image who went on to win the Arkle and Seagram who of course won the National. It was only 2.5 miles in those days. Meister had won his maiden easily at Exeter and we decided to take a chance and he won it well. He was also second in the Philip Cornes Saddle of Gold at Newbury which had qualification races rather like the Pertemps final. We did run in the Sun Alliance but finished in midfield behind some flying machine trained by Paul Kellaway that won as it liked with Ten Plus (who won it the following year) also in the first 5 I think. Sorry to be a bit vague but I don't have the form books for back then. Meister's first run over fences was the same day that Collier Bay ran off with Bradley in a novice chase and dumped him at the fourth fence. Brad came back white as a sheet and rode Meister in the second division to get round after we had backed him. It took him 4 runs to get the hang of fences but then he won four of his next 5, once ridden by Peter Scudamore and 3 times by Simon Sherwood.

Jim also won the Bristol Novice with Lord Jim who ran up a sequence ridden by Carl Lewellyn who won twice on Jefferies.
Report sageform April 22, 2020 9:34 PM BST
Sorry my last post referred to Meister, not Mole Board. Jim also had a near miss in the CH when Cima was narrowly beaten by Dawn Run in the first year that mares got the 7lb allowance. We got our fingers burned that day.

Can't remember foxy, but the trainer is pure class
lot of people don't realise what he is at , bit like tony martin in a way
waits until he sees it in a horse, then bides his time
gets the best out of them when he wants it out of them
pat smullen a major loss unfortunately.
willie is the same , waits and waits and waits
horse is not quite right .....don't rush him...patience is a virtue
feck the press, feck the bookies, feck the punters
when the horse is coming right willie gets that bit extra out of them
very very professional
