Have not seen any other threads about the Arkle trial so here goes. It looked a good field of novice chasers and at the second last they all still had a chance but Lalor  won very easily. He looked to have more size and scope than the other runners and jumped well on the whole, particularly the last two. He will do for me as the Arkle winner but I will wait to see what turns up in the next 2 months. Defi du Seul seems to have lost all form since his 4yo days.

Had my first antepost bet in this race... Lalor at 33/1 (bet365).

I was at Aintree when he won the bumper the year before last and was really taken with him that day. He's an absolute brute of a horse and looks every inch a 2m Chaser. Really think fences could be the making of him, and the fact he is with such a small stable means he's overpriced and somewhat overlooked in my eyes.

Bit of an in and out season over hurdles last time, he looked as if he might win all three of his races at Exeter, Ascot and Chelts, travelling like the best horse in the race, only failing to pick up close home each time. Great to see him handle Chelts so well in the race he was beaten by Western Ryder, and the pair were nicely clear and showed too much toe for Summerville Boy.

Obviously he disappointed in the Betfair Hurdle, but was friendless in the market and happy to forgive him one bad run. Bounced back to form in no uncertain terms in the Grade 1 Novice at Aintree and that was an excellent performance. Struggle to really see why he's a bigger price than Vision de Flos personally.

I think he has been running well on soft ground, but will likely be better on better ground. Set to make his chase debut at Exeter next week in the race Yanworth won last year. Obviously there is a danger he could be a JLT horse, but he's not available in the Any Race markets and breeding does suggest the minimum trip will be the way to go with him.

He's running in the Henry VIII Novices' Chase at Sandown on saturday. He's 'evens' with Dynamite Dollars - the horse he comprehensively beat at Cheltenham - next best at 6/1 with Daikali and Pacific De Baune.

Johnson rides again. Same result again? 'Evens' (why 'evens'?) is value, if he runs. Only 7/2 for The Arkle next March.

I’ve always looked at Lalor as a good “championship” horse rather than premier league and still think he has loads to prove. The sub 5/1 prices for the Arkle are very short on one good run against horses who would be 33/1 at best if they lined up in March.

Saturday looks another good opportunity for Lalor against inferior rivals but must win convincingly to keep at the head of the market. At the prices Diakali at 7/1 is more appealing at this stage.

Looking at the others near the top of the betting market eg Kalashnikov and Mengli Khan  - only 2 points separate them. But he's been the most impressive, I believe. Another easy win will see him re-affirmed his position at the head of the market.

I expect another stonking run on saturday, all things being equal.

He's not a definite runner on Saturday - read his trainer's comments...

Trainer reckoned he'd be electric on good ground at Cheltenham. He's double the price (4/1 to 8/1); keep the faith!
