Trying to stay pessimistic as that's how I like to approach it - less of a kick in the nuts when something goes wrong - but every passing week makes me more optimistic. Something likely to go wrong in advance or on the day(s) surely?

The whole gamut of emotions for me. Pessimistic one day, "this sort of thing won't happen to me", optimistic the next, "well, what can beat them?", stoic the next, "oh well, it was nice to dream".
REPEAT.

I've had every free bet between April and King George day on at prices from 8's to 11/4, amounts to about £500 worth.

Min is the most likely danger to spoilling the bet.  Thistlecrack will likely face tougher opposition from Ireland and Native River than he did in the King George, but he is the most likely winner.

Sporting bet, the morning of Altior's chase debut.

Every day I am checking Racing Post anxiously waiting for one of them to be out.

If i had that bet i would now have had an equal grand laid on each of the 3 runners lol. No way i could stomach the wait or heart ache just in case it happened.

My bets are all £15-£50s and i have somersaulting stomach's at them lol and i manage to get holidays! My flight to Australia cost £2450 on Emirates Newcastle-Dubai-Melbourne-Launceston for 3 of us.

3k treble Silly GOOD LUCK

bit harsh harry callahan ,shirley its a question of liabilities ,i  have  no trouble getting anti post multi,s  on, stakes are usually no more than a £100 but liabilities can run up to the max payout of a million ,not hard to see why bookies will take multis as ante post the odds are on their  side.,even  the bald one  wouldnt knock back a multi ................

roger ,i once had the 1st 3 legs up in a cheltenham ante post multi........... won 13/2.won 12/1 won12/1 and a £20 e/way acca to win close to £400,000 had to wait 2 days from the wed to friday for the final leg ,i must have lost a stone in weight ,couldnt relax ,pacing backwards and forwardsat home had to go for long walks to try to keep my mind off it ,what little sleep i did get would be interupted waking up sweating ,long nights spent watching crap telly programs at 2-4 in the morning and endless cups of tea coffee ,apart from that it was a fookin incredible buzz ...............best of luck with it

no rogCry it was 2010 kauto v denman gold cup and i had backed cooldine at 20s imperial commander won the race , drew good money on the3 singles doubles and treble but the accca would have been the life changer ......................fook i was in a world of my own for those 2 days , thinking about it every minuet of the day and night , then came the" what ifs "i started getting paranoid convincing myself that even if i got the last leg up that the bookmaker would try to get out of paying up "cold sweats  and negative vibes do your fookin head in "  one scenario i got into my nut was my eldest son was and still i8s a manager of william hillz not the brancvh where i put the bet on but obviously has the same surname ,they have a friends and family rule for competitions that family members cant enter ,was thinking they would possibly try and worm there way out of paying if it came up ,...............good luck rog, rooting for ya ..........youve got some long days and even longer night ahead mate  LaughLaughLaughLaugh

also rog at the time of the bet i was unemployed so had fook all to do in the day to take my mind off the bet so went on long walks in the middle of the night  but i couldnt go out in the day for fear of bumping into "jerry the boch " a mate and fellow punter who  is a fookin jinx ,a jonah ,if i see him or have any contact the bet is defo  fooked , remember one year 1st day of the festival  watching it at home on the telly ,ten minuets before the champion hurdle, knock on the door ,missus answers its the boch he wants to watch the racing at mine ,my whole cheltenham rested on the champion hurdle ,on the previous saturday i was in the bookies and i had my last £15 on hendos  punjabi at 33s and the bock Has just entered the room Cry my whole mood changed from being upbeat and looking forward to the festival to the inevetable doom !...................who ya backed says jerry ! thinking on my feet ,not had a bet says i ! if you tell him who you have backed its fooked (nap), an example  i remember having a big bet for me anyway on  big bucks in the hennesey watching it on the telly about 3 fences from home the phone rings " bollax " i answer it without taking my eyes off the race , its the boch "  he says you watching the race! yeah snaps me ! i shoulda slammed the phone down but he caught me off guard " then he utters the dreaded lines " ive backed this big bucks it aint half going well its jumping like a fookin  stag " arghhhhhhhhhhhhCryCryCryyou know the rest . so race starts and thankfully the boch has not mentioned punjabi ,he put the mockers on the fav ,binocular i think and also fooked celestial halo by saying he fancied that ,
anyway race started and coming to the last hurdle the bock is starting to get animated and excited,me i am sitting on my fooking hands wanting to explode and shout punjabi home! but darent utter a word  the boch would get it turned over ,   ce lestial halo binocular  and punjabi jump the last almost in line with punjabi just in front they are hammer and tongs right up to the line and geraghty and  punjabi wins it in a tight finish ..................i let out a sigh of relief  as the boch starts" effin and blinding  "how the fook did that donkey win"" fookin fix "calling hendo and geraty all the names under the sun ,when they weighed in i told him i backed punjabi "why didnt you tell me ,he says ! yeah right.......this game gets into you head

Great story that foyles.

Wonder why though some of us fixate on the myth of the jinx, cos it is a myth you know, the idea of there being a jinx in the room is just, well, in the head. Isn't itConfused

i know seathestars but in the days pre betfair when punters actually sat in the shops for me there was always a bock or jinx in all my regular haunts ,perhaps the big 3 knew this and employed a jinx for every shopLaughLaughLaugh
By:

i think all punters have some superstition of bad luck, jinxes, and little traits that they use or avoid when gambling ,in my local laddies which i sometimes visit theres a fobts merchant on some kind of roulette game presses the button and when the ball starts rolling for some reason he spins around 3 times and faces back to the machine in time to see the ball drop in to the number  groove, wtfLaugh another clown uses a machine nearest the front door pr4esses the button and shoots out of the shop and looks through the glass untill thye ball stops ,dont ask !  maybe its his "edge"Laugh

I used to have some habits. Slips have to be folded a certain way and put in my rear left pocket, a certain way, it has to have been written out a certain way etc. But that was when i was younger.

I actually went a spell where i stopped believing that it existed quite recently actually, helped along by the manager of the local stans, he doesn't know it lol (well i guess he does now if he reads this pmsl) but i'm talking like in the last 6 years.

Well he is one of the top tipsters on O L B G horse racing forum, i don't follow his selections but that's not to say i haven't tried in the past to follow with a strategic staking plan, i just don't have the discipline for that carry on and prefer to select my own anyways. I prefer ante-post too, far easier to hold a disciplined approach i find.
Anyway's we both do the same thing when racing is on terrestrial tv we always try to look for them horses that are shortening up that certain bookmakers push back out for a short period of time in the mornings. I always look up the ashleigh post on the horse racing forum, he doesn't have to. What with having a racing post delivered he's often in that shop early enough so as he can pick the ricks out easily enough. Now and again one is missed by me and i try to get to find out what it is this guy has backed that i aint spotted and when he's in his mischievious mood he'll spout "no chance effing jinx" (as a means of a joke) look for it yourself. Of course one don't have the time by this point so i tend to just let him have his 'moment' lol. Every now and again there be a big priced winner i've missed out on and he'll then spout things like didn't you find it then? Some shrewdies got 40s for that 16s winner etc etc, 99% of the time it's utter bollox and we can all see through him but you get my drift on what kind of guy he is.

So after a couple months of this i thought, there is no such thing as a jinx, feck it, i'm going to prove it and i started doing stuff that i wouldn't normally do in the past for fear that i would never ever back another winner hahaLaugh so i scribbled the name of the horse down with just the time, got the receipt for the bet and stuffed it in my pocket where i had all my money. Absolutely no go, never put a bet in the same pocket as your money cos some how that bet will know you have money already so you don't need to win and it will lose, will always lose, even if it's 1/100 it will find a way of losing. IT WON and that was end to all my stupid habits.

We all have them though, well most of us do anyways now CrazyLaughWink

i had a ante post  footy treble  man utd to win premier ,fulham to win championship and millwall to win div 1 or whatever it was called then done it about 8 games into the season ,used to bet on the footy most sats along with the horses ,anyway from the day i put the bet on i would always  avoid putting in any of the 3 teams mentioned into any footy  bet untill the season ended  , like me betting on them would affect the result of my treble , cue alec fergerson in the team talk "ok lads foyles has got us in treble we wont try anymore  we dont want to see that b,stard win anything "the bet copped by the way for once !it wouldnt have if i had put em in  future bets Laugh tho

ol roger is going through the emotions no doubt every few mins his mind will be on it ,but this is the easy calm relaxed period ,just wait untill fingers crossed the 1st 2 go in ..............then the fun starts ,when i was waiting for the last one to go in in the 2 days before the missus gave up talking to me she got the right hump ,she knew i had a big bet going on and on ,spending it before i had got it , she kept fookin saying and youll love this "how much do WE  stand to win "  i would always answer politely of course  with BOLLAX youll jinx it ,for some strange reason she never swore back at me and was most forgiving ,charm personified which was most out of character,  cant think why tho ........she gave up saying things like is it more than £20,000 what about £30 k  and just kept shtum fook i thought i had gone deaf for 2 days ..

Yeah, i'm usually a pessimist, it won't happen till it does. After my Australia trip i'm in the if you pray hard enough dreams will come true camp. We're all in it to win big, some of us will get that big win, some of us will get it more than once but it's what we do with it that matters the most. But the most important thing is to stay disciplined and to not fall into the abyss that so many gamblers fall into cos there is always another day.
There are some important factors to weigh up when punting, some more than others but rituals, jinxers, methods even down to it having to be a blue inked pen, or if you thump that button hard enough the ball will land in that number more often or the gamble will win, it's all utter bollox really Crazy

its probably why as harry findlay once said "gambling is the greatest game in the world " one day you could be doing your bollax the next you are reaching for the stars ,the ups and downs highs and lows are what keep us coming back again and again !

For reasons too boring to go into I don't punt too much anymore and only start to read the BF forum as we get to the business end of the NH season. However it's anecdotes like the above from foyleswar that make me realise how much I enjoy this game sometimes. Brilliant stuff.
Good luck with your bet Roger.

RTB, I had an ante-post bet to win a similar amount last year, and my emotions sound very similar to yours. Like you say, confidence grew with each passing week. Looking back, I enjoyed five months of great fun, followed by two months when I thought of little else, bordering on paranoia (Foyleswar's comments made me laugh, and struck a chord). You'll probably be in a position to hedge at some point and, if it's any help, all I'd say is do what you think is right. I received plenty of advice along the way, but ultimately it was my decision. The main thing I learned is that, a bit like pain thresholds, everyone has their breaking point. Positions like yours don't happen every day, so I hope you enjoy it and see the bet through (I'll be rooting for two of them!). It's only money after all.
By:
Roger The Butler
When: 26 Jan 17 23:17
I never hedge. Had a big treble in 2013 as well finishing on Sprinter Sacre who I had at Evs and went off 1/4 so could have laid plenty of it off but stuck it out and landed it. I'm sure there are more sensible people around who reduce liabilities but I put the bets on to land the amounts that they are worth when i place it and I'll take that home or nothing.

Will be happier after Saturday if Thistlecrack comes through unscathed with reputation intact.
