I have not missed a day of cheltenham for 34yrs been watching it longer than that.    For me it would have to be davy russell on lord windermere most of the jockeys that rode in the race i have no doubt would have pulled him up . When u consider the year he had, with losing one of the top jobs he still had the balls to ride him like he did, no other jockey riding today would have won on him, talk about confidence.

The one that always pops up in my head is AP's never say die ride on Wichita Lineman.
Report Can't Catch Me February 24, 2016 9:44 PM GMT
And as a Maljimar backer, I've still not come to terms with it Plain

I'd have to go with Wichita Lineman too.

Geraghty's ride on Riverside Theatre in the Ryanair springs to mind too: Tracked leaders, jumped slowly 3rd and 5th, pushed along 10th, hit 13th, stayed on well from 3 out, chased leader 2 out, challenged last, upsides under pressure with 1f to run, led final 50yds, gamely

I was on Maljimar as well CCM, and Albertas Run in the Riverside Theatre race, maybe that's why I remember them so much Cry

Whenever people talk about McCoy and his greatest rides, Wichita Lineman is always mentioned, which is fair enough, but for me his best at the festival was aboard Well Chief to win the Arkle, gave this inexperienced chaser a peach of a ride, cool as fcuk he was.

Flagship Umberalles in the Queen Mother Dickie Johnson. Was never travelling throughout and was kidded shoved pushed and cajole until he relented to run when it mattered
Also Katarino in the Triumph Micky Fitz. Similar to the above Both pocket talk, probably, as I backed them both
Witcha Lineman is right up there also

that thing carberry rode the grand annul a few years ago?

^Belvanno, a fine ride indeed.
Report trigger3 February 24, 2016 11:16 PM GMT
Considering the magnitude of the race then it would have to be Synchronised by McCoy to win the gold cup. That horse and jockey were made for each other, beast and man both made of iron.

Witchita Lineman is a stand out. As are Viking Flagship and Albertas Run.

Sam Thomas Denman
I do believe Harry Findlay and Sam worked out the tactics between them
Findlay knew the lay of the land
He insisted that Walsh make the choice of either Kauto or Denman before the prep race Denman had at Newbury
He knew Kauto was Nicholls favourite horse, clifford baker's favourite horse, Ruby's favourite horse.
Findlay would have to come up with a plan himself
Taking up the running with a circuit to go was a master stroke, Thomas rode Denman with the utter conviction that victory was certain.
I think Denman was the greatest staying chaser i have ever seen before his heart scare.

Big Strand 1997 Coral Cup. Was about 18th coming round the last bend and Aussie Jamie Evans caught McCoy on Allegation with the last stride. Amazing and the boot was on the other foot.

Paddy Brennan was brilliant on Pigeon Island the same day he got Imperial Commander home in the Gold Cup 2010.

Can't Catch Me

And as a Maljimar backer, I've still not come to terms with it

Me too. Can still see those orange silks just lobbing along behind the leaders waiting to take it up and then hearing the commentary about Wichita Lineman coming and spotting it running on and seeing he was going to get there. When they went past the post I felt as though I was the only person on the course who wasn't on Wichita Lineman

Denis O'Regan on Tidal Bay in the Arkle was very good. Horse had a few jumping issues but he let him do it his own way on a long rein and he absolutely blew in. Very impressive piece of horsemanship that was.

if an exchange was around at the time that went any price in the run, he would of been done at a million to one that thing

Mister donovan in the novice hurdle in 1982 was another great ride by tommy ryan, he tried to run out after the last he hit him on the nose with the whip to stop him, rules different then, still got a long ban. Fortunes were won that day, i would have lost the farm if he was beaten.

Can only really go on the racing Ive witness (2010/11>) but Nico's in the Gold Cup last year gets better with each replay. Had every confidence in the horse, went out and made all, strung them out, stacked them up at the top of the hill giving Coneygree a breather before going for home. One of, if not the best front running rides I have ever seen, let alone on a novice or in a Gold Cup. Personally often feel that he doesn't get the credit he deserves for the ride!
Report duffy February 25, 2016 2:59 PM GMT
not the greatest by any means but the much lamented Philip Hide on Brief Gale whizzing past Harcon and then somehow keeping her going when it looked for a moment Harcon was coming back was memorable.
Report maelduin February 25, 2016 3:16 PM GMT
Agree on Paul Carberry. FC and his ride on Bellvano were exceptional. Over exaggerated waiting tactics aren't good for the heart though. There is no in-between with him, he's either a hero or a villian the way he rides.

He does get the title for worst ride as well for me on Psycho. Still have nightmares about that one. Angry
