There has been threads on here over the last few years from people with far superior knowledge than aye mentioning that this could happen in the coming years and what it will mean for horse racing and us antepost punters. I was dismissive of them then, but they seem to have been proven correct. It is a real shame in my opinion!

Imo, there should be a rule brought in that makes owners like Rich Ricci making them have to be made to spread his/their horses around different trainers when/if their registered owned reaches a certain number. J.P and other owners been doing this for years!

what difference would that make,it would still be uncompetitive racing if thats what you are getting at

Extraordinary success is a catalyst for the development of its environment, like survival of the fittest. Any team that has dominated a period of its sport has triggered their rival teams and or the sport as a whole to move forward. Barcelona's 2005-10 dominance caused Munich, City, Athletico, Madrid to catch up and in fairness they all have. Away from the Ricci/Mullins dominance, there is a lot of hope and reason for optimism for the future of the competitiveness of racing in my opinion. Dan Skelton looks to be a marvellous trainer who is only getting better, Joseph O'Brien looks to be taking to the game like a duck to water and will only get better (Particularly with Coolmore, Walk In The Park & JP's money!) and also as far as I'm aware, the two biggest races of the season have been won by Colin Tizzard!

I get what you're saying though STS and I agree with large parts. But I think Cheltenham is all about seeing the best horses not the best prices (Plenty of handicaps for that!). If there was a 5/1 the field champion hurdle we would probably be saying what a bad year it is! Its neither Ricci or Mullins' fault no-one wants to take them on and we should appreciate that these horses won't be around for ever, so lets enjoy them whilst they are. Just my 2 pence.

I agree totally with your sentiments STS but would be against any interference from authorities on ownership and training of horses along the lines you suggest.

My fear is that the racing at Cheltenham (for me) will become boring; last year Tuesday was the worst day I've had at the Festival (not through punting, merely through watching uncompetitive so-called Championship races, accompanied by the sound of favourite-backing racegoers thinking punting is easy).

I recognise that's just me though. The majority will just LOVE lumping on short-priced Mullins bankers and watching them hose up.

The answer can only be though for others to up their game.

Realistically though, this means owners coming into the game with more ego than money, like Abramovich and Sheikh Mansoor in football, since the cost of a top class horse from France is now way higher than what one could realistically expect to ever win in prize money. I'm not convinced this scenario is that preferable either. Ricci seems a decent bloke with his heart in the jumps game but I'm not sure this would be the same with any other multi-millionaire who sees Jumps Racing as his own personal fiefdom.

In short - fkdifino what the answer is!

JB23 - since when has seeing the best horses and competitive races been mutually exclusive (its not just about prices) - we could have a mares hurdle this year that is finally competitive and intriguing - VVM  vs AP - not only are we not going to get that - the owner and trainer have managed expectation so well that nobody dares even ask for it. For every racing fan out there that totally agrees with them being split up (and PLEASE dont defend their decision beacuse that is TOTALLY missing the point) there is a racing fan that wants them to run against each other. Also fans of other teams outside of Barcelona have domestic competition to get their teeth stuck into . More and more the entire NH season is becoming about Cheltenham - i have even seen many comments about ANY form post cheltenham being untrustworthy. So unlike a Man U fan that can get really buzzed at the prospect of winning the premiership, a Cheltenham fan has very little to comfort themselves with if they feel like STS. I cant speak for him but i suspect he is sick and tired of being patronised and told just enjoy the good horses.

I just want to see competitive racing at the so called olympics of jump racing and not the farce we have today. Of course i agree that if we had a 5/1 the field champ hdl that that would be a bad year. One of the best champ hdls of many a year imo was won by Jezki, what price did the jolly go off that yearConfused It was ultra competitive, not a one horse procession as what this years is promising to be!

The politics of racing are very difficult. I suppose the relation to the point in regards Barcelona and football probably ring true here, but where are these other billionaires coming fromConfused Rich Ricci's mate maybe getting into the game on the back of seeing his mates success and maybe a drunken bet in a pub maybe Crazy

And it does all boil down to one thing, what part of decision making is down to the trainer or owner. We all now know WM makes all these decisions, but if he was forced to spread his horses around, would that change thus making little difference. Jeez av just dismissed my own point with more politics Laugh

So a question please, say AP and VVM were trained by different trainers but Mr Ricci still owned both would they run against each other at Cheltenham? I very much doubt it if I was lucky enough to own two such good animals I would rather have the chance of winning two races at Cheltenham than finishing 1st and 2nd but that's just me!

I've followed racing for over 30 years and can never recall anyone else dominating as much as WM currently is but it wasn't always the way with WM. He for whatever reason has taken it to another level in the last few years and fair play to him and time for the other trainers to pull their fingers out. Whatever Mr Ricci and Mr Mullins do good luck to them and first and foremost they are looking after themselves first and I personally think that most people if they were lucky enough to be in that position would do exactly the same.

MS- I agree with the large part of that and I do believe that Cheltenham is becoming the be all and end all of the national hunt racing but thats a completely different discussion. I do also think that Ricci is a man who gets the game & has a true love for it and by that I mean he just wants big race winners. And personally, I don't massively have a problem with that (Id like to think we would all be the same). Where the problem lies in my opinion is that all of these races just happen to be at Cheltenham. Don't get me wrong I don't believe there is a racing fan our there that wouldn't relish an AP vs VMM mares hurdle or a Vautour vs Douvan Queen Mother but I think the same racing fan realises that halving your potential winners for the sake of a competitive race doesn't make much sense (from an owners and trainers perspective).

I would also raise the point, that they haven't flooded the game with money. All of their superstars weren't million pound purchases. Their eye for talent is astonishing, how year in year out they manage turn water to wine is nothing short of amazing. Before Ricci purchased them Vautour, Min, Douvan had won 1 race from 6 in France. There are superstars out there to be bought and not for a great deal. Buts its having the ability to identify them and thats where I think they are so much further ahead than everyone else.

Apologies for any patronising STS. They don't make for the greatest betting proposition in the world but then neither did Frankel. Watching these animals in March and being able to say, "I was there" is good enough for me. Sorry that turned into a bit of a ramble! But hey, game of opinions and thats mine.

You have a right bee in your bonnet about Mullins/Ricci's success over the last few years. I thought one thread about this would be enough.

This won't last forever and it's not like Ricci is snapping up superstars at their peak and monopolising success. He is buying them as young horses and turning them into superstars.

why can people not understand that this is not a criticism of RR or WPM what they have achieved is stunning - for pitys sake PLEASE try and get past that and just focus on how thrilling it would be to see the best race the best and not avoid each other. Using Frankel is simply not a good parallel - if it were a one off that would be very different, but we are talking about multiple situations where multiple horses are avoiding each other. We can say well i would do the same until we are blue in the face but that is not the point - the point is racing is losing out on seeing epic battles and epic rivalries and people being dismayed at that is simply not the same as being critical of RR or WPM. I admire what RR and WPM have achieved, i would admire it even more if they didnt focus solely on the number of cheltenham wins they had but also focused on their ability to create magical and everlasting memories in a sport that was great before they were born and will long outlive them. Is anybody seriously going to look back at the day AP won a mares hurdle by 10 lengths or is she more likely be remembered as the mare that we will never know how good she was - and when we are asked by our kids why dont we know the only answer we can give is because the connections preferred to win a soft race than try and win a tough one, why did they do that, because they had another horse in the tough race. I think it is the unprecedented power they have to shape memories for all of us and the fact that we are being forced to embrace the consequence of their decision or f**k off if we dont like it.

JB23 - re cheltenham - the reason it is very related rather than a completely different discussion is that Cheltenham now is the be all and end all - in the past if horses avoided each other through the season it wasnt quite as bad because we could trust that come Cheltenham it would be different - but if Cheltenham becomes like that also then the landscape starts to look very different - it is one thing to tell people they should enjoy watching annie power win a mares race by a furlong - but you cannot force yourself to enjoy that knowing there was a rival out there that could have made it a race to remember. I for one am not blaming anyone, i am just wishing it were very different.

^ This was an entirely foreseeable consequence of the festival going to 4 days creating the need for more races.  The situation is entirely of racings own making, as another poster pointed out on another thread.  As for the OP suggestion, if I had bought, paid for and financed the training fees, vets, travelling, entry expenses etc for a horse and some official body tried to dictate where I could have it trained, I would politely tell them to go away.
By:
miltons sophie
When: 25 Jan 16 16:05
Q - so are you saying that these horses are only avoiding each other because they can - so any solution would involve taking away the choice -  seems very similar logic to OP - just different solution. Of course there is no solution to this. The owner and trainer have a clear strategy and they are completely entitled to make the choice they are. Some embrace the choice they are making some dont. It is possible a different trainer / owner will dominate sometime in the future and they may make a different choice and run their best against each other. My question then would be would the people defending the WPM/RR strategy be against this as they would prefer them to keep their horses apart?
By:
Quvega
When: 25 Jan 16 16:15
It is nothing like the op suggestion. If racing itself had not gone for the greedy option of extending the festival the horses that needed an intermediate distance had the option of running in a race at possibly more or less than their optimum distance or waiting for Aintree.  You have said this is not about RR & WPM but immediately bring it straight back to them. WPM has just run his top 3 2 mile hurdlers against each other and still gets slated. On hiding to nothing isn't he?

I can't see which horses are ducking each other?  Both Dons, in the same ownership, seem to be heading to the GC.  Vautour and Jack seem to be on course for the GC.

Have I missed something?
By:
miltons sophie
When: 25 Jan 16 16:29
sorry must have misunderstood - i thought you were implying that RR horses only avoid each other because of the change to four days - i took this to mean that they wouldnt avoid each other if it was still a 3 day festival - if you didnt mean this then i am not sure why you are blaming the 4th day and extra races and if you did mean this then the problem is the choice available to the owner which the OPs solution is trying to remove - in the same way as going back to 3 days would. And please if you are going to respond to my post then at least read them - i did not say it wasnt about wpm / rr i said it wasnt a criticism - of course its about them.

And as for the irish champion hurdle  - you really think thats a good example of the best versus the best - for me thats one horse head and shoulders above the rest and the others mopping up really good prize money - a million miles from any number of potential match ups that havent hapened.

HM - to provide a more robust answer to you - Douvan not being kept over hurdles because they have faugheen, faugheen and vautour not running against each other as novices, neither AP nor UDS being given the opportunity to run in a CH, AP and VVM the best two mares around not runnning against each other, NC not running in last years supreme. These are all decisions i understand, the strategy i understand. They are decisions i am not criticising but ones i wish had been different

you refer to DP/DC - we are getting this match up because of who owns them - the op was talking about RR not giggi - you may be right about Vautour and Djak and if it does happen i will be absolutely delighted and irresepctive of financial interest a big chunk of me will be hoping they finish first and second and give us an absolute thrill, and everybody praises the owner to the rafters for being so sporting and then he can feel for himself what it means to give racing such an extraordinary thrill and a different kind of thrill than the ones he has provided to date and my hope is that when he feels this for himself he will make some adjustments to his strategy moving forward. If on the other hand it doesnt work out we may never see a similar match up again, similalrly if they avoid each other i will be gutted - unless v runs again and shows us patently he doesnt stay.

Races that were created since a 4 day Festival: The Martin Pipe, The Fred Winter, The David Nicholson, the Golden Miller, The Nov H'cap Chase, the Ryanair, the X-Country, the Spa.

Apart from Annie Power running in the DN I can't see what the problem there is either.  Are we suggesting the Fred Winter has stopped your 130 rated Juvenile locking horns with Min?

Douvan not being kept over hurdles because they have Faugheen is an amazing response tbh.  Douvan has been electric over fences - Faugheen or no Faugheen surely that was the right decision?

Let's say Faugheen and Douvan went chasing this season and Mullins finished 1,2 in the Champion with Nicholls Canyon and Arctic Fire...then what happens?  Doesn't seem like he can win tbh.

Do you want them all to run in the Champion?  Or all to run in the Gold Cup?  Or Arkle?

Maybe we'd have one amazing bloody race then we can all go home.

sorry HM our posts crossed - personally i would have LOVED to see douvan and faugheen against each other in this years CH and I would love to see AP v VVM - and we dont yet know about V and Djak - and i dont really get why they havent told us emphatically that this is going to happen. perhaps they are unsure whether V stays - so many posters on here have no doubt he stays so why have they not said emphatically V is running in the GC and told the adoring public that unless something extraordinary happens they will both be pitching up in the GC and let us all soak up the build up safe in the knowledge. i know the have indicated but we are not getting this with ANY of the other GC principles

What about a 2.5m G1 Brush Hurdle?

We can call it the Intergalactic Wallop Stakes and shove the lot of them in there.  I'd pay good money to see that Miltons and the ante-post betting would be off the scale!  Think you might have nailed it Happy

HM - why is wanting to see Douvan v Faugheen rather than Douvan potentially win hard help in an arkle so amazing to comprehend - i am not talking from a position of logic and rationality i am talking from a position of what mattch ups would really excite me - and the possibility exists whether you agree or not that had Douvan been owned and trained by somebody else (and please lets at least for the sake of this post that another trainer wouldnt ruin him) that he would be aimed at this years CH and i for one would have preferred that AND have a very competitive Arkle without Douvan

No I get your wish list Miltons.  Totally get it.  But I think it's fantasy talk and I'm not sure Douvan would have stayed over hurdles in another yard.  No one can say the switch to fences has been a mistake?  Tbh it's surprised me Faugheen is still over timber.  Hurdling technique to one side, he's a big bull of a horse that looks like he's aching for a fence.  He gets a trip too...maybe he'll one day be the second horse to do the CH/GC double?

But I'm glad at least one of them has stayed over hurdles this season anyway.  The division would be in terrible trouble without it, eh?

When: 25 Jan 16 18:34
Obviously not everyone agrees but increasingly to me Cheltenham becomes a more glorified version of the Punchestown festival and Mullins dominating and firing his guns sporadically to bring in the most money exacerbates the problem for. I'd imagine they'll go to five days before they'd go back to three but the festival has lost a little lustre for me and we have undoubtedly been deprived of some great races and I can see this trend continuing.
By:

Vautour running in the Champion Chase would create an amazing match up between him and UDS which many racing enthusiasts would lap up with the gold cup being only slightly diminished given the Champion Chase is one of the big three open age races at the festival.

Dream races are well and good but in the real world WM would be a fool to run Faugheen vs Vautour as novices, Faugheen vs Douvan in this years CH. WM policy is to win as many good races as possible and to be honest it's not only logical but financially beneficial.
Also the point about UDS in the CH well the reason they gave was the horse was buzzy and Cheltenham may have too soon and blew his brains. WM does what he feels is best for his horses and owners. Personally I think Vautour should go for the Ryanair this year and take his chance in next years GC but WM knows fair more than me!

This is all only about opinions but the OP quote about Jezki's CH being one of the best is naïve and laughable. WM has taken the game to another level in the last few years and long may it continue. He comes across as a very humble gentleman and like we all know people don't like winners.
By:

the point hm i think douvan would have avoided faugheen even if he hadnt been so suited to fences and not shown this ability schooling at home - i think it possible that he would have been the owners CH horse and faugheen would have ended up being their world hurdle horse as i think they would have wanted to win both races. I couldnt even remotely believe that scenario playing out if the two horse had different connections. Whatever scenario with the strategy they are deploying i doubt very much we would have seen them compete against each other no matter what.

Jezki's Champion Hurdle was fantastic, and one of the best in recent years.

Hurricane Fly, The New One, Our Conor, Jezki and My Tent or Yours.  You had a dual Champion Hurdle winner, a Neptune winner, a Triumph winner and Supreme second and third.

You could make a case for all of them, was ultra competitive and resulted in a neck finish.

I don't mind watching Faugheen scoot around at 1/3 in Ireland, but give me the above Champion Hurdle any day of the week. It's not Faugheen's fault he is so good, but it usually makes races that he is in largely non events.

milton sophie,

You gave a few 1st class examples of how and why the racegoers / Cheltenham enthusiasts have been deprived of several potential epic head-head that could have invigorated racing no end; I do not care who owns / trains what as long as they follow the natural and accepted progression eg winner of the Triumph / Supreme taking in the Champion Hurdle the following year, the Arkle in the Champion Chase, the Albert Bartlett / Neptune in the RSA / JLT / World Hurdle, etc, instead of the sole aim is to win as many races at Cheltenham as possible for the same owner/trainer regardless!

I do not wish to see new rules brought in and neither do I wish to see horses repeatedly starting off long odds-on; if the trainer has an abundance of horses belonging to different owners the trainer ought to run them against one another earlier and not making multiple entries and only confirming very close to day of the race. If so, surely this cannot be good for racing especially racegoers who would like to see the best of the best taking on one another - I certainly do not wish to see a horse turning a prestigious race at Cheltenham into a procession just because the same owner and/or trainer do not wish to run two of their 'charges' in the same race in order to maximise winning the most number of races at Cheltenham.

In a nutshell I'd like to see competitive racing at prestigious meetings that only happens once a year eg the Cheltenham Festival, Guineas, Derby, St Leger, Arc, etc.

Depends on how you define a good Champion Hurdle.  In terms of build up, anticipation, the prep runs - everything about that year's was great.

The New One and MTOY locking horns in the Christmas Hurdle, HF vs Jezki vs Our Conor in Ireland was served up many times.

The threads on here were going into overtime - what do this year's say?  Who will finish second to Faugheen and might as well give him the trophy now? Hardly captures the imagination does it?

The natural and accepted progression for Cheltenham? In the last few years more CH winners have come from the Neptune rather the Supreme so much for that one! Also Best Mate, War Of Attrition ran in the Arkle before Gold Cup glory. You run in the race which suits your horse best for now and the future.
