I see she is due to run in a mares hurdle over 2m tomorrow at Clonmel and was entered in a mares hurdle the other other week though didn't run. Seems weird considering how promising she has looked over chases. At the end of last season they were saying she could possibly be a Gold Cup contender and then after a good first run this season over fences Ruby was saying how they now need to just get her in with the boys over fences to see how good she really is. I thought she looked a good shout for the Ryanair. Maybe this is in case Annie Power doesn't make the Festival?

Was just about to make a thread for this. 1) Is it a prep? Wouldn't have thought so given she was put over fences immediately. 2) Does it mean she is going Mares Hurdle while Annie Power goes World Hurdle? Can't be ruled out but highly unlikely, they want a Cheltenham win with Annie Power and the Mares Hurdle is a penalty kick for her. Maybe if she won last year (don't remind me), it might be different. 3) Does it mean Vroum Vroum Mag is World Hurdle bound? Probably the most likely reason for to switch to hurdles. Just would be shocked that she's not Ryanair bound ... unless a certain Vautour was heading there ...

Willie Mullins did say that if Annie got a prep race she might go for something 'bigger'. I guess by that he meant another crack at the World Hurdle. If that was the case, I suppose VVM would be an alternative for 'the WPM penalty kick hurdle'. Personally, I was looking forward to seeing her in the Ryanair. I do think she will probably win whichever race she ends up in.

Agree could be world hurdle bound and paddies were first to put her in the betting at 10/1. I may be wrong but on her french hurdles form I would in no way be inclined to back her in a grade 1 over hurdles. I think the way she jumps a fence is her best asset and  she will lose that advantage over hurdles.

Paterson. You're last sentence is the first thing I thought when I saw she was entered over hurdles!

I agree they will want to win a Mares Hurdle with Annie Power so maybe Vroum Vroum is going to be the World Hurdle horse? Definitely looks like RR is going to spread his horses around to give him the best chance of as many winners as possible.

Or is it an anti climax and they're simply getting a run into her without adding to her handicap mark over fences? Yet another Mullins puzzle, as if we don't have enough already!

Can't see they would be protecting her handicap mark myself... Surely she's a Graded Horse in the making?

I wouldn't look too much into her running over hurdles tomorrow... there's nothing else to run her in until after christmas and they obviously want to get a race into her now after recent postponements

Last horse to win the Festival Handicap Chase with a > 143 rating was over 20 years ago. VVG will probably be rated 157 or higher by the BHA Handicapper.

Obviously the Ryanair is her race (esp with mares allowance) but given how Ricci approaches Cheltenham could easily see her in either the WH or Mares. All really depends on Vautour's target and whether AP gets a prep run. Don't think there will be too much 2/1 going around for Ricci to be top owner next year.

""She could be a World Hurdle type or one for the Mares' Hurdle but a lot of her ability is in her jumping, too - remember how well she jumps a fence."

Knew they were up to something. Been drifting on the exchange for the Ryanair last few days. Ricci going for the WH/MH/MNH trifecta. Love it.

More in case Annie goes to the World Hurdle I reckon. If Annie gets a prep they will go WH. They're very keen to get the Grand Slam up. They have strong options for The Champion Hurdle , (Arctic Fire, Faugheen, Nichols Canyon) Champion Chase (UDS, Vautour) and Gold Cup (Don Poli, Vautour, Djakadam) but they need ammunition for the Stayers. Annie, VVM, Nichols Canyon and Arctic Fire all on the shortlist.

Willie speaking in riddles. Tread carefully. "remember how well she jumps a fence" gives him the perfect get out. All options very much open for VVM. Personal thought is the Mullins "chasing" conundrum starts to get a little clearer after King George by way that If Vautour clearly gets 3miles then VVM remains a Ryanair option.

Ah yes the perils of backing WPM horses AP @ Cheltenham. Only a few fun accumulators this early on the Ricci Mares.

Willie after today's win, not hopeful of getting a run for my money in the Ryanair now to be honest

Mullins said: "She did what we were hoping she'd do. Options are open but we could go down the hurdling route as otherwise she'll have to take on Grade 1 horses over fences at some stage.

"We have it in the back of our minds that depending on how things go with Annie Power she could be one for the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham."

She's my first AP for the festival. I won't be having many, but took 7/1 for any race regardless.

Bet365 12/1 NRNB (Enhanced Place Terms) on Ryanair Chase looks outstanding right now. Surely won't run if Vautour lines up. GL

I'm not convinced on VVM and would be put off by the reluctance to find her a proper test. She may be a squeak of value if you gamble on her race now but I think she'll be plenty short enough wherever she ends up.

I would be really surprised if Annie lines up anywhere else other than the mares. She's far from a penalty kick against Thistlecrack and Mag would line up in the mares having done no more than a good few of the likely rivals who will no doubt be available at bigger prices.

For me, Annie MH + Mag Ryanair would give more of a chance than Mag MH + Annie WH.

I agree that Annie power is nailed on to go mares route, they gave the world a bash never won it and now especially that the mares is a grade1 they will keep her in that! Vroom will only go if something happens to Annie! I'm like a few others and see her going Ryanair and have a small bet on her for that especially the way it looks like cutting up! As most at the top of the market for it look like going elsewhere so could be a nice chance for her.

Suppose she might still be saved and miss Chelts altogether.

By:

Maybe so. That looks the likeliest to me. Or Annie WH?! And VVM in the Mares? Starting to look as these will be the two races for the horses....

I would have loved to see VVM in the Ryanair myself, but the World Hurdle would be fun too. It does suggest that Vautour is pencilled in for the Ryanair, I fear. I think we would all love to see Annie in a Championship race, but I think after last year they feel that they have unfinished business in the Mares Hurdle. And of course the whole stable - the whole district in fact - is on the big first day multiple.

Willie Mullins is keen to learn more about Vroum Vroum Mag's potential Cheltenham Festival target if he allows her to line up in the OLBG.com Mares' Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday.

The seven-year-old is unbeaten in six starts over fences in Ireland and was just as impressive when switched back to smaller obstacles at Clonmel last month.

Mullins told OLBG: "I'm very keen to bring her over for the OLBG Mares' Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday.

"She's entered in the World Hurdle and the OLBG Mares' Hurdle at the Festival and Saturday will help us decide which route to take."

Vroum Vroum Mag is one of 12 entries for the Ascot Grade Two contest, with Desert Queen, Aurore D'Estruval and The Govaness among her possible opponents.

I cannot believe she is top price 10/1 for the World Hurdle, she is that purely because of connections and reputation alone.

Run exclusively in mares hurdles and chases, with her last 5 races all being 8 runners or less, nearly always on heavy ground and massive odds on in all of them.  Even though she'll get the mares allowance, she is 13lbs behind Thistlecrack.

Not one for me sorry.

I think the Mullins team are well aware of how stiff a challenge Thistlecrack will be in the WH - due to Ruby's association with the horse. They know they need a special one to take him on and that's why they've sent VVM hurdling again. They think a lot of her and they are desperate to have a go at the Grand Slam. The WH is the most difficult leg for them I guess.

I'm with wellchief here. The fact she stays hurdling is a negative in itself for me as it points to her not being as good as the yard's main novice chasers in either of the 3 divisions - she seems versatile enough to be in the frame for any trip. It was only the other week Mullins was saying how good she looked over fences wasn't it?

I think the only possible scenario i'd consider her for any hurdles race is if it's the mares on the back of Annie power not lining up but even then she'd be overbet and around the same price Annie is now with plenty chasing their Annie ante post loss on the replacement. That would only strengthen my play in the mares as it is and i'd be going back in again -  i've already backed polly peachum each way 12/1 to get a better return if she places than what an annie power win would get me at best price now. Much less risk, especially after showing she can go on heavy now which hints at an improvement again over the summer. Can't have the govanness reversing that form on spring ground so can't work out what 3 can pass her based on how consistently she posts figures of mid 150s.

If she went the world hurdle it'd hopefully beef Thistlecrack's price back up a bit and i'd be back in there on him.

Unless you're going to gamble on her target at today's prices there's surely other bets to be had over the 4 days at the same price she'd be once targets confirmed?
