MORE OF THAT is very unlikely to defend his crown in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next month after breaking a blood vessel following a piece of work on Wednesday.

Trained by Jonjo O'Neill for owner JP McManus, More Of That ended the unbeaten run of Annie Power when scoring at Cheltenham last season but lost his own unbeaten record when finishing only third in the bet365 Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury in November.

The seven-year-old has been off the track since running at Newbury but was being prepared for a defence of his title at the festival having undergone a wind operation since his last run.

O'Neill said: "As part of his build up to Cheltenham, More Of That galloped at Compton this morning with AP [McCoy] in the saddle and pleased everyone with his work.

"But when he returned to the yard he was found to have bled and as things stand I would have to say that he is now an unlikely runner at Cheltenham as time is not on our side."

More Of That was the 7-2 favourite for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle with the Paul Nicholls-trained pair Saphir Du Rheu and Zarkandar next in the betting.

Very sorry to hear this news, but have to say the horse hasn''t exactly looked a world beater this season. Don''t think Lieutenant Colonel will be 12''s anymore!

Have to admit at having a little bit of the 8/1 NRNB for Annie in the World Hurdle.

Expect her to lineup in the mares, but I couldn't resist a zero risk bet at 8's.
Report sintonian February 11, 2015 8:32 PM GMT
MOT missing the race takes some of the wow factor away now. But at least there are some unexposed improvers like SDR.
Report buddeliea February 11, 2015 8:48 PM GMT
Chief,
You think she can win the WH with no run all season??
If I were you mate I would be hoping for NR!!
Report wellchief February 11, 2015 9:08 PM GMT
I think she can to be honest mate. I've said for a few months that this World Hurdle is wide open, and I can find a lot of flaws in all the principle runners.

I said on the Annie Power thread that I wouldn't be steaming in on her at evens in the mares because of her price with no runs so far, but at 8's in this, I think there is some juice in that.

There are a few who we don't conclusively know if they full stay 3m at Championship pace, so it could be more of a speed race than usual, and she would be the speediest of them all (RoR would be a few years ago though).

If there was an out and out stayer in there towards the top of the market, I'd be less positive.
Report buddeliea February 11, 2015 9:23 PM GMT
There's some proper stayers in this race mate, the Irish are all real 3 milers and weren't in the race last year. Personally I really think this is a better race than last year, and I can't see her winning with the season she's had....or not had!!
Report gazovic February 11, 2015 9:23 PM GMT
agree with budd a billion percent.

no doubt someone (not on this medium) will mention Quevega FTO year in tear blah blah but the WH is a pressure cooker.

imvho

The mares they can win with her 95% right (not much less btw). I think connections know this and havent really been touting the WH all year despite the cloud over MoT. AP might even have improved this year on a normal trajectory (so would MoT in fairness ) and so entitled to another crack.

DESPITE that ......... the NRNB on the mare is tempting for the WH (as stated by earlier post) because if connections go for that she would need to have been showing something truly astonishing at home.

For what its worth, I don't think she has enough in hand in the mares given the setback and lack of prep at the current price. Even if I am wrong this time on the day, I have faith in this approach.
Report wellchief February 11, 2015 9:33 PM GMT
Yeah Gaz, I've even said on here she is not Quevega, so the fact that Mullins did it with her doesn't automatically mean he can do it with Annie.

The mares is the easier race, and I also think this World Hurdle field is better than last years. I think she should have ran in the Champion Hurdle last year too.

I fully expect her to run in the mares, but as you say, she'll only run in this if she is spot on, especially with the mares being a G1, so its a no risk bet.

She'll go off fav if she runs, despite the lack of a prep, so can always lay off.

Re the stayers, I suppose we'll have to disagree Budd. Reve is the strongest stayer in this field, but runs below par in the WH.  The likes of Zark, RoR, Whispher, UTPT are probably 2.5 milers to me.
Report buddeliea February 11, 2015 9:42 PM GMT
Lt colonel,Monksland and jetson will all stay well, and imo would be folly to dismiss them mate.
Report wellchief February 11, 2015 9:47 PM GMT
Not dismissing them at all mate. L Colonel would be one of my biggest winners of the week.

The reason I'm going off the Colonel abit is due to a stronger lineup now than when I backed him, and if Annie is added then it just adds to that.

My concern re Colonel is that I'm not sure Jetson is good enough to win a WH, and L Colonel has only narrowly beaten him twice.

I remember a while ago you said if L Colonel is 10's then Jetson has to be value at twice the price, and I can't disagree with that.
Report Makybe_Diva February 11, 2015 9:51 PM GMT

Report buddeliea February 11, 2015 9:54 PM GMT
I've got jetson and Monksland at fair prices and will be adding lt colonel on the day. I know some are pooh poohing their form In Ireland but I think they have been running well and all will run better on decent ground. I am also hopeful that Briar H I'll will appreciate better ground and ain't given up,on him yet.
I really think this is a real open race mate, with loads of chances.

Report tomdeane February 11, 2015 11:09 PM GMT
I am of the opinion that the Irish form is pretty weak. Seen most of the races in-person and watched them back a lot, and just don't rate them. That said, the Brits don't look a great crop, but I'd still prefer some of them over LC, Jetson et al.

Annie Power might have too much on to win it after the non-season she's had, but she'd be by far the best horse in it in my opinion.
Report stevo1 February 11, 2015 11:52 PM GMT
Annie would only have to replicate last seasons run to win,
but as we know had setback and 1st run back, surely go Mares
race, hope not as backed her stablemate.
Report buddeliea February 12, 2015 7:01 AM GMT
Yeh,as I said Tom,you are not on your own in pooh poohing the Irish form. Let's see how they do on decent ground in March, you may be surprised mate. Monksland will be the better one imo, nicely improving as the season has been going.
Report tomdeane February 12, 2015 9:45 AM GMT
I think Monksland would be the one I'd be most wary of bud, so agree there. I'd still be worried as to whether he'll be good enough. I know it's going back a bit, and Simonsig was a top-class novice, but I'd be concerned by the distance Monks got pumped on his only visit to the Festival so far.
Report buddeliea February 12, 2015 7:36 PM GMT
Badly hampered 2 out Tom, would have been a lot closer mate. Good horse this one.
Report tomdeane February 12, 2015 9:09 PM GMT
Just rewatched it and he was hampered a lot worse than I remembered. Still not sure if he'll be good enough (guess we don't know if he retains all of his ability) but he's got his chance in an open year and the price is fair. I have backed Zarkandar and Cole Harden in this, but might have a tiny saver on Monksland too.
Report buddeliea February 12, 2015 9:14 PM GMT
I think he's worth a saver for you mate. Not saying he will win of course,it's an open race, but I do think he's been trained patiently and has shown more and more as the season has progressed, and I do think decent going will bring about more improvement. Reckon he will be spot on come March and he will certainly stay well.
Report wellchief February 12, 2015 9:16 PM GMT
Do you not think he should have beaten Dedigout getting 5lbs? He's been off the track too and made his comeback in the same race as Monksland after Christmas.

Good ground will see him improve, but after two years out injured it would be a massive task for him to win.
Report buddeliea February 12, 2015 9:25 PM GMT
Possibly mate, but I weren't too bothered about that race to be honest.Just wanted him to show he's getting there.
Think It's been all about March all season.
Report wellchief February 12, 2015 9:36 PM GMT
Yeah true, ground and course have suited him in the past. Backed him in his Neptune and remember him getting hampered, but by that time Simon had flew.

Without his injury I think he'd have a great chance, because I think he probably the classiest of the Irish, but its his injury lay off that just puts me off him.
Report buddeliea February 12, 2015 9:56 PM GMT
Absolutely fair points chief, and he has a bit to prove with his problems he's had.
If he's there on the day that's half the battle won, and would be just reward for connections patience.
And if he is there on the day,I really think he's a big danger to all, and I reckon his price will enable people to have him on side, should they wish to.
Report stevo1 February 12, 2015 10:02 PM GMT
Race wide open which is good Budd, decent prices to be had like Monksland as backed Lt Colonel at big prices on here,so may have saver nearer day.
To add to Zarkandar and Whisper, not too long now cannot wait!

I'm not saying he will run, but the fact that everyone on here is talking as though he definitely won't seems premature to me, particularly bearing in mind that this horse's trainer makes Willie Mullins look helpful when it comes to letting people know about what's really going on.

O'Neill waiting on More tests

A definitive decision on More Of That's participation at the Cheltenham Festival could be reached by the end of next week.
Sky Bet

The Jonjo O'Neill-trained seven-year-old won the Ladbrokes World Hurdle 12 months ago when ending the unbeaten record of top Irish mare Annie Power, but was beaten on his return to action at Newbury in November and has not run since.

He bled after exercise earlier in the week, and the defence of his Cheltenham crown hangs in the balance.

O'Neill said: "We should get all his results back by Wednesday, I think, so we'll know more by the end of next week."
Report sageform February 15, 2015 12:17 PM GMT
Is it worth having a small bet on MOT for the WH in case they change their mind? It is beginning to look like the weakest Grade 1 race at the Festival. If he were mine, I would be aiming Fingal Bay at it.
Report buddeliea February 15, 2015 12:21 PM GMT
Not imo.
Its not that bad a race even if you think it may be a weak grade1(I don't agree fwiw)that he can just turn up after this prep, the horse aint THAT good!!
Im think its a deeper race than last year.Could not have him on my mind at all.

Report sageform February 15, 2015 12:30 PM GMT
Fair enough. FB is not a chaser on the evidence so far and he won a competitive Pertemps, demonstrating that the course is right for him. Philip wrote him off as a World Hurdle contender after defeat at Punchestown but Saphir de Reu, Zarkandar and Reve De Sivola are hardly super stars are they? What else would you rate in the race? I agree that unless they have had it on their mind since the Hennessy, it is too late now to aim FB at the race.
Report Benjy February 15, 2015 12:32 PM GMT
Not sure how you can say 'horse aint THAT good' tbh.

Still very lightly raced and won a World Hurdle in very good style on just his fifth start over hurdles. Definitely would want him onside if turning up but I don't like antepost bets like this. Although I can see why some mate. Binocular was obviously with Hendo but the JP link is there.

Don't think Fingal Bay is entered so we are back to the top 3 in the ante post market, Reve De Sivola if it is soft and More Of That if he runs-and any dark ones lurking in there somewhere. My only other general comment is that very very few horses stay 3 miles over hurdles at the top level so don't have a big bet on one that has not won over the trip.
Report sageform February 15, 2015 12:42 PM GMT

At fishers cross is hurting. Has back problems, a friend said yesterday and i agree with him that like us humans with back problems we sometimes dont necessarily feel the pain until we are working hard and using those muscles. Very unreliable to use a horse like that
Report wellchief February 15, 2015 12:47 PM GMT
I don' see why there is the negativity around this race this year - not a poor quality race at all imo.

Really interesting betting race, with a Triumph winner, Champion Hurdle winner and a Coral Cup winner in it, along with the second (non injured) highest rated hurdler in England.  Harsh to judge the likes of Saphir du Rheu, Lieutenant Colonel, Un Temps Pour Tout, Cole Harden etc as poor because they are only second season novices.

Judge them after the race imo.

Would you back him on the day,if he turned up without a prep after a long break, with the only run this season being poor and a recent setback??

I think Big Bucks would have struggled in that scenario.

If i am honest, and yes i have backed 2 of the 4 but I can't have repeat winners on my mind of any of the championship races this year. I don't think Jezki is as good and if i am wrong in that regard i don't think the race will be run in the same way as last which obviously suited so well, not taking into account that he DID show, (not does imo as hes only won the churdle once in the spring, what else has he done in at the fezConfused) how do we know he will repeat it if the race (unlikely) is run in the exact same way as last year?

SDG Horses don't come back from injuries that involve bone or severe muscle tears, though this assumption could be blown out of the water after Tues morning when he has worked but then i also heard they were thinking of a handicap run at Chepstow next weekend if he works well?

MOT we all know, or don't if his well being. Probably most likely of the 4 imo to retain his crown but have a feeling with the evidence we know about he is a one time winner

LW CGC is stronger this year and for same reasons as Jezki in that race will be run differently as all races always never are run same way he will struggle in a more open looking year.

I have Jez in my book for both the Churdle and CGC but only merely on a cover basis and more so for the possible place element of the bet.
Report harry callaghan February 15, 2015 12:59 PM GMT
Would you back him on the day,if he turned up without a prep after a long break, with the only run this season being poor and a recent setback??

he ran last year off the back of a break after winning a minor grade 2 race

very easy to write the horse off after running a poor race on bad ground when the trainers horses were struggling to win a race with any horse, not ideal what has happens but if he runs i would take it they are happy to run because they are happy with him but to say like you have you don't think he is that good is a bit silly considering he won last years race as a novice really and was clearly struggling with a breathing problem and a stable well out of form in his last race...always forgive a horse one bad run imo however what has happened is not ideal with the race just round the corner but he is the class horse in the race on all known form imo if he were to turn up
Report wellchief February 15, 2015 1:05 PM GMT
You'd think he'll be going chasing next year whatever happens this year.  With that in mind, I'd be wanting to protect him for the sake of a chasing career - maybe aim for the 3m Hurdle at Aintree, which is four weeks after the World Hurdle.

Ladbrokes do it every year, there is no rule 4 on antepost bets before final decs, no matter what the screens say or the market online say they will not apply it. I think when the trading rooms apply it to the markets the systems automatically display it and it is taken off after a couple of days. I had the same thing last year and the year before that.
