A friend has won a pair of hospitality tickets for gold cup day and we are pondering how to get there, timings etc to miss traffic etc whether to get train, drive etc. We will be travelling down on the Friday morning travelling back Friday night but want to get there as early as is possible.
What is Cheltenham like for bookmakers shops? And how close are they to the course? We use them to put on price boosts on the day including selections using the price wise tables printed in the racing post i.e prices that have gone but are available once again for 15 minutes morning of the races.
If we get train, how far away if the station, how much a taxi might cost? We probably will drive mind so whats the traffic like time of day etc lol?
Not sure where you are travelling from so hard to advise, bookies all in the town centre 20 minutes from the course, the station is a 40 minute walk from the course. If driving I would get there by 9am, the trains will be very busy coming back after the racing that,'s why we stay down Friday night. Not sure on the cab price but there are shuttle buses to the course from outside the station, and back again after the racing.

Bus from Train Station, will set you down in Town Centre and you can get back on to get to the Course (or walk for atmosphere). Bus back to Station, was £5 return so probably be £6 now. Centaur good to sit down for 20 minutes, do placepots etc, go to Paddock hour before racing for Interviews. Enjoy!!

Our early plans are to get to the town as early as possible and have a good look around before going to the course. He says that there is a parking badge in the package though we don't yet know what time we can access the parking areas. We are hoping that we can be allowed to park early as then walk into town for the bookies prices as described above though like i says we have no way of knowing the timings as of yet. Am guessing though if it is anything like Cartmel you could be sitting in a queue of traffic for anything shorter than an hour trying to get in and out after racing you done well lol! (Though admittedly we know of a route into Cartmel that misses all the public signed route lol. Well first time we went we didn't hence the hour thing.

You would be doing amazingly well to be only in traffic for an hour on GC day.
All bookies offers are better online anyway if you're that bothered. Surely just enjoy the day.

Haven't been to Gold Cup day for a good few years now. Crowd is far too big, and full of eggheads. You get a much better crowd on the other three days imo. If they move it to Saturday it will only be worse (but that's a different debate).
I've never been in club at the Festival, so I can't give any advice for that.
We always park in Bishops Cleeve. Its free and about a 20 minute walk away, but you just walk past gridlocked traffic on the way back to the car, so I think its actually quicker, and from there it's country roads all the way to the M6 which is about a 20 min drive - but it depends if you really want to go into Cheltenham Town Centre, because my route avoids that.
Trains and buses back to the station will be chocker after racing - especially on Gold Cup day with a bigger crowd.
One of the biggest flaws that they have is not being able to take a drink near the track. I'm not talking about going to get hammered, but when you've spent months building your AP book, so you're not interested in betting on the day, its nice to get a good spot and have a few beers. Other Jockey Club courses do it, so I don't know why they have a different rule at Cheltenham.

I've actually just spent a good hour and a half doing me homework on this and this is what i've come up with.
Drive from my home town in North Tyneside to Blackpool Thursday morning (after the price boosts for WH day of course) and enjoy that days racing there and meet up with said friend. After the racing drive to either Weston Super Mare OR Bristol where I will have booked a hotel room for 2 nights. Train is only £15-20 return and an hour away. Drive back Saturday morning.
All in all it is the cheapest and most affordable way and I can drink alcohol
