I keep my handicap picks close to my chest until I've placed my bets. I've a fair list of horses with comments waiting for the entries.

i certainly won't be getting involved ante post on such a race, though given the trainers reputation for getting one ready, if the horse turns up on the day i'll be having an interest.

He,s been on the radar for 12 months,down to 137 I see,one of many affected by the gd/fm on day 1,that apart,the pilot comes with a wealth warning. CV knows that close to my chest is plotted up. |

I'll email you my shortlist Noc after the entries are out, see what you think. Problem with discussing horses openly on betfair is what little value is sometimes on offer goes quickly.

Plenty of interesting plots no doubt,trainers with multiple entries and handicap sleepers near the top. Must be in the minority,love the established handicaps as much as the graded races sometimes,rarely bet ante post,so its probably where I see the value for myself. |

My pedigree? The utter failure of the 'forum plunge' I selected on the 3m Handicap Chase on Day 1 last year! Still, I think I've got the winner of the Coral Cup and Grand Annual so yahh-boo-sucks to everyone! |

I picked Holywell for this well in advance last year at 16s (proof on The Racing Forum)however cometh the day the stats said he couldn't win due to having > 11st so I threw a few quid at other beasts too. When he won his novice at Donny I vividly recall McCoys attempts to look like he was being very busy aboard him on the run in when he had a ton in hand!
I think the weights issue now is not quite as relevant due to the increased quality in these handicaps. Being ahead of the handicapper is the key, along with ability to handle the rough and tumble of the festival, if this not stating the obvious! |

Absolute ditto to the above regarding Holywell. I text a load of friends to say he was the one only for him to have one more run and go up in the weights, so didn't back.
Don't think I've ever been so horrified watching a horse come round the bend before the climb!! As Sod's law would have it, both the people I was with had backed him following my text! Devastated wasn't the word |

Oh, I also backed Bensalem the year be fell but not the year he won, which was also my first ever trip to cheltenham!! Not a kind race to me!

RTB.....That is the way forward,certainly once entries are out,highlighting horses that we as punters think are ahead of their current mark.
Race title threads previous years great way of keeping thoughts together on certain races.Not one negative comment re vs last year was a statement in itself,testimony to the regard your fellow forumites had for the work you put in. Pedigree.........ALDERWOOD |

The weights issue is an interesting one for this one. Previously it's been the way forward to look at those carrying 11st 2lb and below, with an OR of 143 max.
Last year it went: Holywell 145 11st 6lb Ma Filleule 143 11st 4lbs The Package 141 11st 2lbs Green Flag 143 11st 4lbs I discounted all due to weight, other than The Package which was due to age. Will have to rethink it this year |

I use stats in a similar way,last year same result as you in this race,however the ground they raced on tues/wed was miles quicker than forecast. Weight does stop horses no doubt,less so in my experience though when its gd/firm,conditions we used to get, until the so called watering policy was introduced. The wettest winter on record,yet the course record was broken over hurdles twice on day 1,somebody got it badly wrong,i,m sure there were trainers thinking along those lines. In essence I,m treating last years day 1 and 2 results with caution,be interested to know if you look back at your selections,how many wanted fast ground? |
