As hinted by @onehundredandeighty, a very big difference is that back in the dark ages, it was easier to know who'd be running where.

Good horses were for the most part spread more evenly, rather than being concentrated in just two or three yards, and the distance choices for the novice and championship races were two or three miles, with no two-and-a-half mile compromise.

So if Trainer X had a good novice chaser, he'd not have half a dozen others to keep it apart from, and you'd know whether it was a stayer or not.

Don't know. I can see how I'm doing now cos of my online accounts but never kept records before. But when I think of the old days, some of my biggest wins, I think, how did I get away with that?
  Thinking for a while of trialling that, just to compare. Has it's good points, less work, less betting cos it would be more notebook betting, waiting for ones that you've seen run well. Also other bets, you'd be relying on strategies more, things that have done well before. Still comes down to value, though.
  Having trouble with internet signal for a while now. In a foul mood cos videos sticking and running slow, so I know I prefer these days to the old. I'm not convinced I win any more than I did before or enjoy it more. Perversely I prefer the more work it takes.

Great days,  Nothing could beat having to trawl through about 10 pages of Hills prices on teletext, with a reload speed of about 30secs per page, just to get to the one event you were interested in the price on.  And then repeating for Ladbrokes and Corals...just to find that nothing had changed since when you last looked the day before.

Betting tax was great too. 

But yes, I made a profit.  Not as big though.

Yup Steamship, remember those numbers well, 30 mins before work everyday trawling thru em, prices hardly ever changed, don't know how often they were updated.... I always found the Steamers page more of a help

What about the advertisement (I wont name the tipsters)but that stayed on for ages then the page you were after would pass really quick.

Back in the day it was 3races on BBC1 and the 420 BBC2. I think BBC came on about 145 and first race was 2.15 no satellite channels then run to bookies to listen to or later watch the last 2 races.

Or there were 15 races on one page and the missus shouts out for summit and when you go back to it you have missed it ...and remember when it was blower only in the bookies....hard to believe how things have moved on

I emailed RUK the other Weds when Lydia and Steve were on telling about me being off school 78 or 79 and mum taking me to her friends house and sitting with her dad watching the Tuesday of the festival since then I never did school on Cheltenham week booked holidays when working for someone else and never missed a days TV or being there since that day. Being ill that day has cost me thousands of pounds but many happy memories.

Ignoring the racing channels, there was masses more on normal TV.  The beeb had 80 odd days racing and C4 showed lots more mid-week, good races too.
