Help me oh wise Betfairians. I'm trying to compile a top 10 of horse racing songs. They must specifically reference racing, no Wild or Crazy Horses, tunes though they are. So far I have.

1. Bottle of Smoke by The Pogues - The perfect racing song -insurmountable number one
2. Longshot Kick de Bucket by The Pioneers - Classic Ska tune and uniquely about losing.
3. The Fix by Elbow & Richard Hawley - excellent new(ish) but old sounding song celebrating skulduggery.
4. Jockey full of Bourbon by Tom Waits - possibly about the dark side of a jockeys life. Possibly not.
5. Up on Cripple Creek by The Band - nice couple of verses about going racing with a volatile female companion.

And that is all I've got. Please give your suggestions, comments, abuse etc. But please none of those bloody awful Irish tribute songs about Ruby / AP / various horses. And definitely that Cheltenham song from a few years back. Let's keep it classy.

Up the junction by squeeze if bobs worth gets beat ConfusedExcited
Report johnny boy February 26, 2014 10:02 PM GMT
See what you've done there but that's not what I'm looking for so Squeeze do not squeeze into the list despite being an all time classic and even mentioning bookies (albeit in a negative way). Next suggestion please.

You need to throw in Chicane - Saltwater, that's what they play when the winner comes into the paddock from the Championship races… sends goosebumps down the neck!

which is a sample of Clannad's Theme from Harrys Game hence a tenuous link to Irish contemporary music.

No no and thrice no.
It's not actually about racing. Racing has just appropriated it.
Music for atmosphere at sporting events appals me.
It's a dreadful Enya / euro pop hodgepodge that makes me want to set fire to my ears.

theres a mention of the galway races in waxies dargle, another pogues classic

MONSTER!!
Report johnny boy February 27, 2014 5:10 PM GMT
Now we're getting somewhere -

Bonnie - afraid Waxies Dargle just has one line mentioning Galway Races so that's DQ'd. Need a least a whole verse.
Silvercoat - Beetlebomb is an excellent tip - Race commentary as song, eat your heart out Simon Holt, straight in at number 4.
Rogerthebutler - Sham 69, definite qualifier, thank you. Need to have a listen before I decide its chart position.
Ramruma - Cheltenham charity abomination was discarded in the original post - falls at the first.
Sintonian - Monster is not about horse racing although at a push it might describe the state of mind of some Cheltenham attendees come Friday night, however it does not qualify.

So two new entries gives us 7. We must be able to get a top 10 at least.

Chicane - Saltwater...definitely

Royksopp - In Space

Oasis - Fooking in the Bushes is brilliant to swagger into Cheltenham

The Police-I cant stand losing....... you
Report johnny boy February 28, 2014 4:45 PM GMT
Jasey - that's not a song and it's not even a very good play on words - DQ'd
Makybe_Diva - You're right he doesn't like this - not about racing - DQ'd and I'd imagine that's the first time Davy Russell has ever been called "scrummy". He'll probably pop another lung if he hears that.
Ballydoyle - No, No & No - read the rules.
Zilzal1 - V. Poor.

Current chart is

1. Bottle of Smoke by The Pogues - The perfect racing song - insurmountable number one
2. Longshot Kick de Bucket by The Pioneers - Classic Ska tune and (maybe)uniquely about losing.
3. The Fix by Elbow & Richard Hawley - excellent new(ish) but old sounding song celebrating skulduggery.
4. Beetlembomb by Spike Jones (thanks to Silvercoat) - Race commentary as song, eat your heart out Simon Holt.
5. Jockey full of Bourbon by Tom Waits - possibly about the dark side of a jockeys life. Possibly not.
6. Win or Lose by Sham 69 (thanks to Rogerthebutler)- Tension in the bookies.
7. Up on Cripple Creek by The Band - nice couple of verses about going racing with a volatile female companion.

Let's have some more

rogerthebutler - you're right it is about horse racing but I've got to draw the line somewhere so that is not going in.
Mooono - Jeeeeesus. I've not seen that before and wish I hadn't. I'll put it in at 10 and hope that someone can suggest something to get rid of it.
Cozza84 - Nope see earlier explanations.
Goretski - That's one of the ones I was specifically excluding in my original post (bloody awful Irish tribute songs about Ruby / AP / various horses)

The Gambler - Kenny Rogers.

admittedly not horse related, but applicable to us all.
Report johnny boy March 6, 2014 12:22 PM GMT
bonnie - Sorry got to be specifically about racing so the Gambler is not qualified.

Still only 9 in the chart, surely we can get a tenth before Tuesday?

Jackson and Jane by Paul Brady  (last seven verses shown below)

He went to the stable, to the mare he did say,
'The hour is approaching and we must away,
For a cup at Cootehill you have twice won with fame,
And this day we are challenged, and you must run again'.

She turned in her stable, 'Kind Sir, don't you know,
This cup is my own and I won't let it go,
For twice I have won it and I mean to do still
And we'll roll it in splendour from the plains of Cootehill:

The Jockeys were mounted and all in a row,
And if you had a' been there when off they did go,
The bets they were makin' ten guineas to four
That the cup back to Creeve would return never more.

When Jane she heard this, well, her mettle did rise,
Over hedges and ditches like lightning she flies,
And with aloud 'neigher' these words she did say,
You Bellamont sportsmen, I'll show yous the way'.

When Jane and her jockey were half round the course,
Miss Jane and her jockey began to discourse,
Said Miss Jane to her jockey 'Kind Sir let me know,
Where are my opponents or are they in view?'

He turned in the saddle and he cast an eye round,
'As for Squire Adams, he lies on the ground,
I'm afraid that poor Curry by Spanker is threw,
And the rest of your opponents they are not yet in view.'

When Jane she heard this, she went in at a race,
And into the scales the balance was laid,
The hall was surrounded for Jackson & Jane,
And the cup went with honours back to Creeve once again.
