Enjoy Grin

Great day for me as I'd had a bet at 14/1 ante post when he had won the previous year. An old friend had gone in large on Harchibald and was screaming him up the hill so I felt a celebration was inappropriate.

The old friend was never the same again and became very secretive with his betting.  Ruined a good friendship. Shame

thanks mate, that's superb.

There's another version of this race with alternative commentary. I'm not sure who is commentating on the other version but the commentary goes "And he still hasn't said Go on Harchibald...he's laughing at his rivals...and still he waits...but Hardy Eustace finds more, and he wins again".

I was there that day, right on the finishing post. Got chatting pre race with a Yorkshire man who was on Hardy Eustace. I was on Harchi. Halfway up the finishing line he says '' you've got it ''. I smiled nervously.

Ten seconds later I was stood there open mouthed. In a sensitive way he just grimaced at me and walked away. ( the best thing you can do to someone who has done their bollux. Not patronise them with a '' Oh my God how did he not win that?'')

It's incredible to think that a horse nearly won the premier 2m hurdle race ON THE FECKKING BRIDLE!

I'm a relative newcomer to racing and have only followed since 2008ish, and don't know the horses quirks etc, but that looks a Shocker of a ride from Carberry!! Why didn't he go sooner? By waiting surely all be actually did was help hardy eustice to find more

No - like I said, wasn't following racing at the time so don't know if he was widely criticised at the time or if the horse was purely a bridle merchant who had to be ridden like that.

He was a strange beast Tory. Watch the Christmas hurdle vs Rooster Booster on Youtube.

He was 50 lengths down with 2 hurdles to jump, still on the bridle and managed to reel the Booster in.

Carberry rode an incredible race here. Could of looked very silly.

Phenomenal race!! Just makes the CH look more bizarre though as he found for a bit of pressure in the Xmas Hurdle!

Old Harchibald had the ability to make the best jockey in the world look like a knob - i miss him.

I like the way they used to cut to Tania for the in-running prices!

It was even better before they gave Tania a job!!!!

Thanks for the link -  reminded me of El Gran Señor in the 1984 Derby going so easily and then not quickening as fast as the jockey was expecting up to the post. I think this was worse than 84 as carberry did not give his mount enough time to give him a chance of catching hardy eustace.

Has there even been a more talented 2m hurdler??

I loved Istabraq for example, but I cant see him being able to match Hardy Eustace and Brave Inca from the last up that hill....on the bridle!!!
