Get Me Out Of Here.sure i had it at 12s or maybe even 10s.2ND.
Bobs Worth 5/2.WON.
Long Run.4/1.WON.

I only had a fiver eway acc and it would have paid about 7 grand. To this day im still convinced gmooh beat Final Approach.
Also had MTOY for the Supreme at tasty prices with certain doubles/trebles.Last year would have been my best festival if it had won.Instead was my worse.

That's a real hard one to take with Oscar Delta, Ramruma, I was gutted and had a tenner at 28's.

No way linc, I had the exact same bet with GMOOH, had the bigger prices with GMOOH, think it was 18's, 20's, but I'm sure the others were lower.....not that it matters now, think it was about 4k it cost me. That was the time photo finishes cost me at least 4 figures 3 times within a space of a year. How I laugh at it now Plain

@Fabulous, @lincthesinc -- I wish I'd not posted it now. It has brought it all back and now I'm feeling low again after having managed to wipe it out of my mind. Worse things happen at sea.

Having backed Salsify the year before I wasn't abandonning it last year, but the Foxhunters hasn't always been so lucky for me. I'd had a 'Run' double for big numbers in the year Long Run won the Gold Cup and Willie jumped off Baby Run half an hour later.
Report unclepuncle January 23, 2014 2:13 PM GMT
Two stick in my craw.

Had a lovely £20 antepost double on Captain Cee Bee for the Supreme @ 20/1 (won) and Venalmar for the Ballymore (Neptune) at 33/1 (who just got pipped on the line by fiveforthree and Ruby Walsh. This was the year when they abandoned the Wednesday and the race was run on the new course instead of the old course. This change in track made all the difference in my opinion as Venalmar would have been far better suited to the sharper Old Course. Cost me over £14k anyway.Cry

Had first 4 winners on Gold Cup day last year all running on to Chapoturgeon @ 5/1 in the Foxhunters. Laid off £300 so made some money but would have been closer to £7k if he'd won.Cry

Oscars Well when he sprawled after the last in the Neptune, was on ante-post at about 20's and also in an ante-post e/w double with Boston's Angel who won the RSA about half an hour later.

Also, not one horse but the placepot on gold cup day 2010 was huge and missed it by a leg (Albert Bartlett) nearly put the Nicholls second string in and it would have got me through to the tune of about £33k. Had to keep the outlay down..... ah well!
Report M13 January 24, 2014 12:28 AM GMT
Memory not so good, but think it was Granville Again let me down for the placepot one year, i thought it had fallen at the last, it finished fourth.

Also had a 20 acca, first three won and had Pyscho trained by Tony Martin as the last leg ridden by P Carberry,it ran in the County, came from last place(ish) 2 out, then at the last fence it took 2nd and got beat less than a length.

Deffo not Carberrys finest hour cost me 5 figures.

Still remember its red jacket slicing through the field, like a knife through butter.

Oh well, Good Luck this year everyone.
Report M13 January 24, 2014 12:32 AM GMT
Funnily enough, he campaigned Ted Veale in the same races last year and had it all prices from 25s in to 10s on the day.

It won although it was only smallish stakes.

Small compensation/Large aftertiming Laugh
Report sageform January 24, 2014 9:22 AM GMT
He only cost me £2 in the end after laying a lot off, but Karanja unseating Nina at the start of the bumper cost me a potential £800 payout from ante post bets as long as 80 before he became the favourite on the day. A net 400 to one bet looked pretty good until the tapes went up.
Report wellchief January 24, 2014 10:40 AM GMT
Sorry M13, I had Silver Jaro in that race at 50's (don't care if that's aftertiming).

I remember it was pitch black because of the four days into three year. My only other winner in the entire festival was Tidal Bay in the Arkle, so Silver Jaro got me out of a hole.

That was my first ever Cheltenham as well, so if Silver Jaro hadn't won, I probably would never have gone back, so I owe him a lot.

My brother kept telling me to back Cousin Vinny in the bumper but heard Zaarito was a "good thing" and backed accordingly, which was stupid!
Report M13 January 24, 2014 6:55 PM GMT
If i remember Wellchief, Silver Jaro was well tipped up in the getting out Stakes, i seem to remember Matt Chapman yup him and i think maybe wrongly that Hugh Taylor gave the winner.

Oh well good for you, a 50-1 winner is exceedingly rare but at Cheltenham and the last race, at your 1st Cheltenham Festival, well thats the stuff Dreams are made of !! Brilliant.

Good Luck this Year.

I never worked amounts out, but every horse that I picked on the day it was abandoned because of the winds, either won or was placed when it subsequently ran.

I tend to do each way bets at those sorts of prices, fiver placepot etc.

It'd have been a good day for me.

This weekend in 1999 still brings back the best and worst memories for me. Placed an ante-post bet with Corals the Friday before the Irish CH as wanted to be on French Holly before it hammered Istabraq and romped to favouritism for THE CH and also be on See More Business before it won the Pillar the next again weekend and got cut for the Gold Cup. Both lost and my enthusiasm waned somewhat. I can remember the bet as if I were writing it now.

6 x £3 doubles, 4 x £5 trebles and a tenner e/w acca,

French Holly (7/1)3rd
Call Equiname (Champion Chase 25/1) WON
Katarino (Triumph 8/1) WON
See More Business (14/1)WON

I will never forget the atmosphere in my local pub when See More Business got up to be Go Ballistic in the GC and landed me a 22K windfall, the place was going bonkers. Now time has worn on and the money is well gone I still reflect on what might have been, not so much re French Holly losing but more if only I had put the mighty Istabraq in as a banker as it was trading at 7/4 if I remember correctly for the CH when the bet was placed. How many gamblers have said "if only" over the years.

Here's when it gets silly, as the next year I thought I would try and repeat the event and the same bet was placed but double the stakes

Fadalko (Arkle 8/1) Fell
Edredon Bleu (CC 7/1) WON
Lord Noelie (Sun Alliance CH 12/1) WON
Looks Like Trouble (GC 12/1) WON

Fadalko ran again on the Thursday and finished a clear 2nd in the Cathcart, while not claiming it would have beaten Tiutchev in the Arkle I would love to have found out!

Apologies if this appears indulgent but it is actually cheering me up thinking of the good old days when I seemed to land some great Ante Post bets (also had Bacchanal at 33/1 for Stayers Hurdle in 2000) as ever since I have been on the most horrendous run and any thoughts that I was a "judge" have long gone and I fully expect every ante-post bet I place to not even go close (who says confidence isn't important in selecting horses!).

I often wonder why my luck, or judgement has totally deserted me and come to the conclusion that I probably thought I was indestructible after such fantastic bets and have paid for that arrogance and cannot find the thought process that served so well back then.

Good luck to all on landing that life-changer, as although money is money, if you asked me of a more thrilling and satisfying way to obtain it there is none I can think of that would be better than by way of landing a touch involving the sport you love.

joe mac in the bumper in 1998,backed three winners on the day French holly, florida pearl and wandering light and put pretty much all my winnings on him and to top it off if sparky gayle had won the milmay of flete instead of a fast finishing second I would have won the ten to follow for Cheltenham week

Classy post Saritamer. I enjoyed reading that.

If I am allowed to include flat racing, a non racing friend rang me to tell me that he had been tipped Venture Capitalist for the Wokingham (ridden by Alex Greaves) at 40/1 and Piccolo for the Kings Stand at 33/1. I already fancied Piccolo so agreed to join him and the person who gave him the tip in a combination bet of £20 each way both horses and a £10 ew double. I had a tax free account in Gibraltar at the time and the bet was accepted. VC was only fourth (4 places) but only beaten a neck and 2 short heads while Piccolo won easily. A good payout but the nearest I have been to a 5 figure pot.

The other selections were Zaynar won 4/1 triumph hdle, Well Chief to finish 2nd to Master Minded Champion Chase, won 9/2 and Dunguib won 7/1 Champion bumper. I still got a decent return though.
