I think the 2014 champion hurdle could be the most eagerly awaited race in recent Cheltenham festival memory (possibly with exception of Kauto v Denman - Part One).

There appears to be a school of thought that MTOY is a bridle merchant. I 100% disagree with this. I think he's a serious horse and if he's found wanting it will be not for the want of trying.

Howdi - looks a good Champion Hurdle but remember one of TNO / MTOY will get beat at Kempton, and HF, Jezki and Our Conor all reportedly going to Leopardstown so two are going to suffer a dent in their reputations there.

I've noticed over the last few years these races tend to look very good early in the season. By the time the races comes around, too many have suffered a defeat along the way.
Report duffy December 17, 2013 1:16 PM GMT
I don't think he's a bridal merchant as such but think that he is such a strong traveller through the race that he may not be able to go much quicker if the jockey asks him too, when the jock suddenly goes from sitting there steering to pushing and the horse goes no further ahead it gives the impression he's chucking it in, that's wrong IMO.

I have a theory that MTOY's will have the ability to travel on the bridal off of a suicidal pace that would normally kill most horses and I really wish that this  years race is run like last years where as strange as it may seem I think he would have won, even though he got beat in the supreme!

Nothing will travel like MTOY's through the race, regardless of what TNO's legions of fans may thinkWink and I just hope that they go such a pace that everything is pretty much legless come the end, so he doesn't have to find much more, where he would be vulnerable...perhaps they can sacrifice jezki to set a scorcherSillyWink

The New One is a better horse and has a bigger heart. Wouldn't surprise me to see Tent win the Christmas hurdle but would shock me if he could outbattle The New One up that hill in March.

In my opinion, The New One would have ripped that Newcastle field apart way better than Tent.
Report Ballydoyle December 17, 2013 4:01 PM GMT
Jezki has no chance in a Champion Hurdle as he's simply not quick enough and neither has Our Conor who won a mickey mouse Triumph Hurdle.

1 - The New One
2 - My Tent Or Yours
3 - Hurricane Fly
4 - Fresh air

March 2014.

Ballydoyle

one thing's for sure here anyway, you've deffo hit on a better way of dealing with typing out MTOY's all the bloody time....tent!
Report Ballydoyle December 17, 2013 4:29 PM GMT
LOL...Yeah I've backed "Tent" at 7-1 each way and The New One also at 7-1 win only a couple of months ago. Firstly saw The New One rip Rock on Ruby apart at Kempton and was happy with that. Then didn't see Tent live at Newcastle but read rave reviews but after watching it I felt that if The New One had been in that field he would've done Tent quite easily. Saturday was a key race for The New One cos Zarkandar is no mug. The key point for me was seeing The New One quicken away as Zarkandar drew level. He will have learned a lot from that as well the jockey. I'm not sure if Tent has that in his locker. It needs to fall apart from him to glide through. If Tent eyeballs The New One there is only one winner for me. The one that has been there and romped up that hill when it mattered
Report bluebirdfan December 18, 2013 4:13 PM GMT
If MTOY doesn't win at Kempton he has no chance of beating The New One at Cheltenham
Report Ballydoyle December 18, 2013 4:24 PM GMT
100% agree with that. Kempton is by far his best chance of beating The New One
Report duffy December 18, 2013 5:54 PM GMT
Tent will tear TNO a new oneGrin
Report Eeternaloptimist December 18, 2013 5:57 PM GMT
It's a brave man to say that Jezki doesn't have the speed for the champion. A couple of lengths off the year older Tent last year having jumped the last two poorly and being ridden by an average jockey against two of the best three currently riding and not settling during the race.
Report buddeliea December 18, 2013 6:03 PM GMT
Fascinating race which could reduce the main contenders come March.
Nothing I have seen thus far makes me prefer one over the other though as far as the Churdle is concerned.
Having watched their respective races this season, I don't really see anything clear cut at all to put one in front of the other.
But then I aint backed one of them!!
Report kavvie December 19, 2013 12:01 AM GMT
our conor won a mickey mouse triumph?!?check out the ones he beat on the bridle..a few of them arnt too bad?
Report sageform December 19, 2013 7:15 AM GMT
Best of the rest in the Triumph worth around 145 so Our Conor at 160+ depending how much he had in hand. He still needs another 10lb to reach an average CH winning rating.
Report kavvie December 19, 2013 9:03 AM GMT
he achieved 160(at least,as he won everything so easy) as a 4yr old.usually horses improve at least 10/15 so hes right in the mix.time will tell!
Report Ballydoyle December 19, 2013 12:37 PM GMT
Our Conor has no chance in the Champion Hurdle. Feel free to bring this quote up whenever you like especially in March.
Report buddeliea December 19, 2013 1:15 PM GMT
Hes a horse that none of us know how good he can be.
Far too unexposed to make sweeping statements imo.
Report FOYLESWAR December 19, 2013 4:16 PM GMT
to say our conar has no chance in the churdle  is crazy! only if he did not turn up would he have no chance  ! what if the other top 4 in the betting were not to line up ? would he still have no chance ! every horse who lines up has a chance of sorts !
Report Ballydoyle December 19, 2013 5:15 PM GMT
Call it crazy or whatever you want, I say he has no chance and have laid accordingly.

Can't beat The New One, My Tent or Yours or Hurricane Fly to name but 3.
Report buddeliea December 19, 2013 6:47 PM GMT
Well you would be wrong to say that,as you don't know.
We can all have an opinion on the most likely winner of a race, but to say a horse that none of us know how good it is cannot win,is just plain ignorant.
Report willie the milk December 19, 2013 6:51 PM GMT
I would like to have seen OC before this though. Still a nagging doubt he aint quite right.
Report Ballydoyle December 19, 2013 7:12 PM GMT
You have to make opinions in this game and beating Far West and Sametagal in a Triumph - have a look at what they have done subsequently - doesnt really fill me with fear for a 5/1 lay 3 months from the race. From the way Our Conor ran on the flat he looked as if he'd been out the night before with Charlie Sheen. Then his age. 5...remind me what the record of 5yos is in the race as well. That's right...dreadful. They sold him as well didn't they? Would you sell a 4yo that was gonna be a superstar?
Report buddeliea December 19, 2013 7:16 PM GMT
He did smash them though Bally, werent as if it was close and you could use it as some sort of substantial form guide,he was miles ahead of them.
No one is saying hes a good thing, well I aint, but he really could be anything till he bets exposed.
Report Ballydoyle December 19, 2013 7:23 PM GMT
Yep he won easy live right in front of my very eyes as the crowd roared him home but for me, the Triumph Hurdle form is in a word, rubbish.

Melodic Rendevous gave Far West 4 pounds and a beating then got laughed at by My Tent Or Yours and he's 50-1 for this.

Sametagal's got beat by Court Minstrel off levels.

The only decent one out the Triumph crap is Rolling Star.

I love Cheltenham me. Its the easiest 4 days of the year and the one where trends come alive time after time, as well as the banter. LoveChelltenham

tis true love the banter / diferent opinion Excited
Report buddeliea December 19, 2013 7:44 PM GMT
Well I would totally ignore any form with the Triumph, Our Conor was in a different race to the rest of them!!

To be honest I really aint that confident that I could name the best of the novices of last season, and I don't think I could say which would be the worse either!!
Aint backed any of them yet, prices been too short for the evidence I have, and I aint backing gut feeling with those prices.
Will be taking shorter price,or backing HF if none of them have shown me enough to convince me they are up to his  ability...none of them have yet.
Only ones I have backed are Annie Power at 40nrfb,and Un de Sceaux at 25nrfb - don't mind taking those sort of prices to find out if they are good enough.
Report kavvie December 19, 2013 11:25 PM GMT
they sold our conor..they knew he was no good..they couldnt wait to get rid of the useless 4yr old beast..all they got for him was a million...bad price really for a 4yr old gelding??!
Report Ballydoyle December 20, 2013 12:08 AM GMT
A million?oh dear....what a waste....did Spurs buy him?
