Never been to Cheltenham.
Not sure what day to book for next year?
Tues, Wed, Thur or Fri?
Also, I doubt I will get a hotel in Cheltenham. Which near by town is the best to stay in (train journey)?

Tuesday for me.
The buzz of the opening day, less populated than Gold Cup day, and with some great races like the Supreme Novices Hurdle, Arkle and Champion Hurdle.
Contact tourist office, and they might be able to put you into a bed and breakfast in somewhere like Prestubury or Bishop's Cleeve, which is walking distance to the course.

Tuesday and Wednesday way better than Thursday and Friday. Tuesday best.
Tuesday and Wednesday absolutely the best 2 days. Like judo, I'd go on the Wednesday in 2014 to see Sprinter Sacre.....fingers crossed that he gets there of course!
If you are not staying in Cheltenham, then you'll probably get a good deal in Bristol or Birmingham city centre. Train services to both are fast and frequent. Gloucester is a more obvious choice but the city centre hotels are rank and the place is a bit of a sh!thole.

I stayed in Gloucester one year, never again. Stayed in Bristol too, much better and less than an hour on the train.

It probably depends what type of trip your after I think. It depends whether you're just there for the racing or decent nightlife also.
Have stayed in Bristol twice and the nightlife was really good, although I did think it was a bit far on the train.
Stayed in Gloucester one year and just spent the nights in Cheltenham and got taxis because it's not very far (only about ten minutes on the train if I remember right) but to be honest the city wasn't very nice at all.
Even stayed in Cardiff one year, but tbh I wouldn't try it again. Was very far on the train and despite the city looking really modern the nightlife was pretty poor.
Stayed in Worcester last year and it was probably the best we've found so far. Not overly busy, but there are good places to drink if you look round hard enough.
Plus it is only 30 minutes on the train. Only downsides are that pretty much the only hotel I could find was a Travelodge (but it was a very good standard) and there is no Cheltenham atmosphere in the city. Nevertheless we're trying Worcester again this year.
As for days to go, no doubt in my mind Tuesday is the best by quite some way. Wednesday is also fantastic, especially getting to watch the Black Aeroplane in the flesh.
Without doubt the best week of the year, hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
