Have a friend who is writing a book about Cheltenham Festivals past, highlighting a dozen or so memorable races, and of the dozen this is the only one he doesnt have footage of. He would be very grateful if someone did have it and of course would cover all costs and ensure safe return. Thanks.
Dunc - I've definitely got it (somewhere) on a VHS video that's been gathering mould for years (that may be a real concern) but as the indices have probably perished, it might take some tracking down.
If all else fails then be patient as I'll make an effort when I get the time...I've only recently 'mastered' transferring VHS to DVD

DI - I'll have a browse after the racing's finished and it's a case of hoping for the best regarding its condition, as I've definitely got it...there are only a handful of pattern races I've failed to see in well over 30 years!

DI - I've had a scour around and I've not been able to track it down yet, but some videos from the 90's have mould on them, so the 80's stuff maybe in a bad way - hopefully Fidway can help you out.
Sorry for giving you false hope (I've definitely got it, and every other race) and I feel like a bullshítter now, though I'll keep trying. That's what happens when you move house...things in order go AWOL, never to be organised again

good news and bad news. found it and got hold of a video recorder but the tape has no sound for some reason.i also forwarded to the ikdam race and watched it and the quality wasnt too bad for a 24 year old tape but when i rewound back to the start of the race just to be helpful it wasnt nearly as good a watch, was all jumpy.
to cut a long story short you can have the video tape but its not very good. maybe something can be done to clean the tape. just tell me if you want it and i will post it to you.

posted it today duncan. i googled cleaning up old vhs tapes and its not exactly rocket science so i would imagine your mate would want to do that as its of poor quality, depending on how much he wants the footage i suppose.
never bothered posting my address to him, he is welcome to keep it as its not much use to me.he could probably have every Cheltenham festival and grand national meeting since 1984 as the are just gathering dust too lol.

There a guy on youtube who has tons of old races. I can't see the 89 triumph hurdle, but he has triumphs from the 80s, so maybe he would upload the 89 running if you messaged him.

I watched that race from the reserved seats in the main grandstand - in the adjacent seat was a once a year punter that I'd got talking to over the previous two days, to the point that we were telling each other what we'd backed. In the Triumph his £10 each way Tote bet was Highland Bud.
After the race, when the Tote returns were shown on the rolling display above the big screen on the opposite side of the course, he asked me why it was showing the number on his ticket as paying a huge amount as the dividend. Turned out he'd got the number wrong when placing his bet (Highland Bud and Ikdam of course were adjacent on the racecard as well as at the finish), and his £10 ew was on the winner. I believe the win div was over £150 and the place about £40, so he collected enough to pay for his entire week with plenty to spare. If Highland Bud hadn't been placed, he'd probably have thrown the ticket away!

Better to be born lucky than shrewd, Anorak! Yes, was 3-figs on the nanny and my mate/the author was aboard, hence the inclusion in his book. Mad to think it was 24 yrs ago.

Fidway, Richard had video cleaned up/transferred and it has come out good as new...he cheered home Ikdam again last night when he got home after racing and said he enjoyed it almost as much as the day itself! He's also done copies to send to the Holders, who i'm sure will be equally delighted. Thanks again for that....you're good deed for the year nailed by Gold Cup day! duncan
