"Our vet Paddy Kelly came to check him out today and everything else was perfect, his bloods and all but he has picked up a lung infection," Casey said. "I knew something was up on Saturday. He wasn't striding out the way he usually does down the back straight. That wasn't the real Flemenstar.
"He's 90 per cent certain to miss Cheltenham. To be honest I'd say it's practically 100 per cent as I can't imagine there would be enough time to have him ready. We will more than likely try to get him ready for the two-and-a-half miler at Aintree [Melling Chase] now. That looks the best option for him.
"It's obviously a blow but he's a young horse with plenty of years left in him. He'll come back from it. I've no doubt about that."

heard it all before....he ran his 3m race....now they are hiding from sacre and they look down on the ryanair....its a pitty the horse wasnt owned by a realist.

I think the only chance Cheltenham had of seeing Flemenstar was if it had bolted up over 3 miles the last two runs. Connections would have been forced into it then. Deep down they never wanted to bring the horse over anyway as it travels so very poorly.

Can't see how he could have been too under the weather since he finished within 2 lengths of SDC. Saving face exercise???? Possibly, but whatever the case I wouldn't be wanting to run him at Cheltenham now. Doesn't stay well enough to win a Gold Cup, and to my eyes hasn't got the speed to serve it up to Sacre. With connections opinion that the Ryanair is a class below their horse then talk of the Melling Chase seems strange as the Ryanair is worth about £50k more to the winner I think? (Correct me if I'm wrong!) Maybe just trying to save what they can of a pretty difficult season?

That's just consigned the poor horse to another season chasing a 3 mile lost cause next year then....after he fails to stay in his races next year I wonder what their vet will find....rising damp, tennis elbow!!

It dont matter what you think so may as well just accept what they say. Better than just posting cynical commemts, and acusing them of lying.waste of time imo.

This horse is my best winner anti post, layed him for all festival races he was entered in, the stable has made no secret he is a very bad traveller (to the corse not in the race). Not the way you like to collect but it pays to listen and watch for yourself, was never going to stay gold cup trip, wouldn't beat SS in QMCC and they didn't want to run in the other race.Easy money.

More excuses; Graeme83 is spot on; they know they cant win the Gold Cup or Queen Mother and they dont rate the Ryanair. Horses with lung infections cough, get snotty noses and bleed. Do you think the 'lung infection' would have been diagnosed had he beaten SDC by 1/2 length on Saturday?

If you believe the trainer and the horse was all wrong the other day then you wouldn't touch SDC with counterfeit. I agree with Robbo, Horse was never travelling to England in a million years. Will swerve Aintree with a "niggle" then hose up at puchestown beating over the top horses.
Lay again for for Cheltenham 2014... as same scenario will happen

The horse & jockey must be totaly confussed like the rest of us!! He's a bad traveller then a good one,he's a gold cup horse then a 2 mile horse.Racing tactics no one knows about, not even the trainer & Lynch. He ll probably be entered for the midlands grand national now, then off to royal ascot for a sprint.I can see a new owner & trainer, coming to you SOON.

Decalec, you don't have to bet a vet to know that their is nothing wrong with the horse. SDC jumped well enough, and this is why Flemenstar came second. It could be argued that Flemenstar ran a better race than he did in the Lexus, because if you subtract the ground lost and losing distance in the Lexus, versus the decent SDC jumping and winning distance, i'd say Flemenstar ran approximately 4 pounds better than he did at Christmas. By the way, there is nothing wrong with the Ryanair chase.

Agree with the posters that say they're saving face. In one fell swoop they've closed down the media circus that would have hounded them in the weeks up to Cheltenham. Right or wrong it was the best thing to do. imo.

"Decalec, Best leave them to it,plenty of threads around if you want a sensible discussion. "
Come off it Budd. You think someone who is calling people 'baloons' and types in capital letters is too sensible for this thread because we many of us believe there is nothing wrong with the horse. I think you two need locked up in a Betfair looney bin.

Totally agree, and i just feel the horse could have been handled better. They should just have said if he isn't going for the GC then he isn't going at all. I don't have a penny on the horse, but some folk out there do. Look at how he finished his race, there was nothing wrong with him, or with how he was ridden.

Agree on his running but not the ride. The way he jumped the 2nd last was magnificent. The horse was giving his all and then BAMM Lynch decided to nearly strangle him and lose all of 3 lengths. You think he was f'ing riding Harchibald or something. Flemenstar is a battler but you have to put him in a position to use this strength. I guarantee that if he used the same tactics as used in the Lexus he would have won. I see them targeting the Lexus and Hennessy next year as well. They'll get it right one day. gltu

It's all about opinion as they say. I really couldn't see the result being any different, no matter what the jockey was going to do. If he was restrained i think he wouldn't have got there. Russell knew that if he injected pace he was going to be hard to beat. Flemenstar just isn't a 3 mile horse. I don't know why they were still talking about the Gold Cup. If SDC made the mistakes he made at Christmas, then i think Flem would have won by a good few lengths, that's why i think he has more than run to his mark.

Normally i would not Greame, but perhaps hes like me and gets annoyed when people accuse others of lying. You have absolutely no idea if he has an infection,so why not just believe those that do? Not difficult is it?? Why be so cynical mate.
On another note, had Lynch not started racing till the run to the last instead of when he did,he would not have had to take a massive pull and would have given the horse a much better chance of staying and winning the race. Not saying he would have won,but saying he would have had more chance.

How could he have had an infection if he ran as well as he did in the Lexus, or perhaps even better. He was even finishing his race better. Why ne so cynical, because it's horse racing and people are economical with the truth all the time. It's a part of the game all the mild porkies.

If thats what he thinks, thats fair enough imo. Ive seen him a lot better as well to be honest, although my opinion(fwiw)was that the jockey was told to put him to sleep, and woke him up too early!!
yes mate, they certainly are economical with the truth, but make up a lung infection? not so sure about that myself.
Still maybe the future will tell us more.Would be a lot more satisfying if it did.

Are we in danger of overestimating how good SDC is??
Flemenstar has travelled all over him in the other races. So,if you looked at it that way, then it Could be he werent himself the other day. Just summising.

So looking at the Lexus,we have 3 of the 4 that contested the finish either doubtful or non runners in the Gold Cup.
If Flemenstar was not right the other day,IF,then we have a false 2nd fav for the Gold Cup,dont we?
umm,food for thought.

I just think its sad we will be denied the chance to see this horse at Cheltenham again. I have no ante post money on him for any race, but always felt he would be suited by the Ryanair. This race doesn't hold the prestige of the other two but surely its all about the distance and 2.5miles seems perfect.
His run on Saturday didn't appear lacklustre. Often when horses are subsequently found to have respiratory infections it is after a run too bad to be true, but if the connections have found some evidence of lung infection then fair enough, (I take back my previous post).
DECALEC fwiw its 'veterinary' and yes I am.

Flemenstar wasn't himself because he was doing something foreign to him,how could he get into a nice jumping rythmn after being reigned back throughout the race.I think despite this,he showed what a brilliant horse he is. Just sick of hearing excuses,if he had tailed off then fine.had all this excuse rubbish with Grands Crus for the last twelve months.

Personally think the best gold cup trial we've seen this season is the Denman chase, that Tom George horse sent them on a blistering gallop. No hiding places and Conti who wasn't even fully fit still made light work of it.

I agree think conti should be fav. Form looks solid. Would prefer sir des champ but think conti is solid. In my book bobs worth still has something to prove - 1 win in handicap

Love the way he jumps Brooksielad .Not overly flashy, just pops away in a great rhythm ,gets the job done without touching a twig. Ruby on board always a big plus also.

Now I'm no vet, but I would have thought that it would have been nigh on impossible to perform the way he did with a lung infection....I assume that the horse needed to breathe during the race didn't he.

It's a pitty thsi horse will never quite reach those big heights, but that's what happens when it's not managed properly. Duffy, i'd imagine you're right. He was finishing better than he was over the festive period. There is nothing wrong with him.

I've got a lung infection just now myself and can barely walk up the stairs, and I certainly wouldn't be able to take a pull just before getting to the top.

At least you haven't entered yourself for the Aintree stair climbing contest, know that the participants of the Cheltenham stair climbing stakes might not be at their optimum. If you contemplated that, i would hope that the champion cheltenham stair climber forgot about Aintree.

In all seriousness, I get the trying even harder bit, but we're talking about a lung infection, an illness that surely couldn't fail to have a debilitating effect on its victim, a niggle in the back, a twinge here or there, maybe, but the breathing apparatus knackered by inflammation and such like....to perform with no sign of a problem whilst the lungs are being put through their absolute toughest test and at the end of the race actually take his jockey into the lead!!!!

Am i the only person around yet to be convinced about SDC? Flemenstar has outclassed him every time hes run against him,and even the other day he could possibly have beat him with a better ride, and Flemenstar it seems werent right!!well according to those close to him he werent. Its obvious Flemenstar aint a strong stayer as well. It aint obvious to me that SDC is a Gold Cup Winner.

Well i can see why hes a contender, but every time i watch him i just aint all that impressed to be honest. When i watch Bobsworth i am,its just gut feeling i guess.

Its dangerous to dismiss horses, but im going with Bob and SC to fight it out.

That's fair enough Budd, you can't pick them all! For me it's between SDC & BW with SDC winning. I think Conti may get found out over the trip while Long Run will be staying on but may be doing so from too far back. Just hope they all make it now. SDC was staying on well in the Lexus as well no?

He was staying better than FL and Flem, but i have my doubts about them as true stayers anyway. Tidal Bay stays a lot further and he was finishing the best,i think he would have gone away from SDC the last 2 furlongs. Cant prove it i know, its just my thoughts based on watching the 2 in their races.

not really Jasey, Tidal Bay went from 2 lengths down to half a length up in a matter of strides, as soon as Ruby got there the horse stopped. Would never of got nailed if the race wasn't over.

Interesting people think the longer trip will find Conti out as it was his last performance that persuaded me he would stay, especially if it's gd/sft.
Do you not think The Giant Bolster possibly went off too fast at Newbury last year given all the horses nealy broke the track record?
