Cheltenham Festival

I was impressed both on course at Cheltenham when Goulanes stayed on up the Cheltenhsm Hill to beat Cross Kennon on only his 2nd hurdle start, and again when beating Super Duty, staying on to lead in last 50 yards, on his Chase debut.
Both were on testing ground, over an extended 3 miles, and his victims arent raw novices they are battled hardened professionals, which gives great merit to his successes.
GOULANES looks an interesting type for the 4M National Hunt Chase, as 3M looks a minimum, and a test of stamina (on perhaps better ground) at the Festival should show him staying on when the vast majority have cried enough.
He is 16/1 in one place, and that looks a fair bit of value, as if he lines up on the day unbeaten under rules, then he would likely be pushing towards the top of the market.
Williw Mullins offers some interesting opposition, and like GOULANES they have multiple entries, but my preference is for this David Pipe horse that has plenty of size and scope.

I like this horse too though I have a couple of reservations about him for Cheltenham. He will have at most 1 more run before the Festival and is a very inexperienced horse. The other is about a jockey - the top amateurs may already be committed for this race - I understand Derek O'Connor is already booked for Rival D'Estruval and others like J P McNamara and Nina Carberry will almost certainly be riding for J P McManus.

Festivalfanatic, I agree on jockeys, I would like to see a top amatuer linked to the ride asap. Notice that prices across the bookeys have all moved in today, the 16's has gone, the best i 12's, and the low is 8's, so this looks like it could be the Festival race for him. Roll-on the Festival, and DP will get a good shot at a top jock.

Like your thinking on Sea of Thunder. Would have been a Cheltenham Hurdle winner, at 3M, but for a fall at the last, and good form this year (2nd at Cheltenham). Long-odds now are due to non-show LTO, but profile overall very sound. 50's sounds a great EW price if ground gets quicker, as he is 144-rated already over fences. Would prefer GOULANES even at 12s, and any rain will spread them out and could leave him staying on when others curl up.

Not quite sure why the owner would want a horse that wins a grade 2 on its debut over fences, and remains UNBEATEN over 3 miles would agree that the horse must have 4 miles and go amateur route, when it clearly needed all of a Pro's skill to coax him home. I would keep pushing the horse until I found the bottom of him over 3. Lets remember the RSA is over a more gruelling 2 furlongs further.

Tom Scu after also said this horse was a grinder. What sort of horse do we all look for in the RSA? No brainer for me. RSA all the way.

I think you make a fair point BA. Years ago Wetherby was a real tough steeplechasing test but not these days. The extra 110 yards is all uphill too!

BigAdz, follow your point on the RSA, but I think that the RSA is much less of a slog now the Jewson has taken some of the numbers and pace out of the race.
The last couple of years the horses winning/placing arent sloggers. If Pipe thinks the same then the 4M suggestion on his website is probably where he is going. All the comments from those close to the horse, are that he needs minimum 3M already, a wins a win at the Festival and hardly any of them stay 4M, where I think connections know that Goulanes will. |

Goulanes is 56.0 on Betfair if anyone thinks he is going for the shorter event, whereas less than 12 for 4M National Hunt race, I think he's turning up and going to be King of the Grinders.

If a horse wins by getting up on the line in a 2mile race, do we all say he suddenly needs 3miles? So I appreciate it is a tad different 3miles up to 4 miles, but there is no guarentee a horse getting up over 3 miles needs 4miles. How many horses win GN prep races over 3/3.4m and dont see out the National?! Its fairly clear to me when the race is this prestigious you dont step him up until he is beaten. It was his debut in a Grade 2 for crying out loud, how far must he win for people to say the RSA is a worthy target?

I agree with you BiGA but that's trainers for you.
Nowadays you win the Neptune Hurdle - bang, your favourite for next year's Champion Hurdle (some bo11ocks about 'how well you travelled' is usually mentioned) Win the Arkle and they're talking of you being a Gold Cup horse, whereas you win the RSA and youre either bottomed out forever or heading for the Grand National |

I think what we can agree on is that he is a cracking horse to have a go at the Festival with, and that trainers dont always do what you want them to (Quevega-World Hurdle.
If you prefer him for the RSA, then theres £20 at around 40s for that race with Betfair. Good luck to the horse, I hope he wins in whatever race he goes for. |

I think the ground must be coming into play too. He has needed every yard of three miles in his races this year on very deep, testing ground, so presumably connections are worried that he'd be taken off his feet on better stuff in the RSA.

If the ground determines which race Dynaste contests, then you are probably right td. On undemanding ground, this looks booked for the RSA and Pipe will probably tell Roger Brookhouse he hasn't a cat in hell's chance of beating him. On heavy ground, Dynaste may well run in the Jewson.

Pipe said today that the owner is keen on the RSA. Will follow this one whether RSA or the 4 miler. Tough horse, stays and has Cheltenham form.
