Any locals know any decent racing-friendly boozers in this part of Cheltenham?

I'm staying there this year and could do with a steer on where to go for after-racing entertainment. Ditto any recommendations re curry houses or other restuarants

You are in for a treat mate.

There's a good half dozen takeaway joints. A couple of good indian's and a chinese.

Some great boozers also.

Is the pick of the bunch.

Charlton Kings is a lovely part of town. Naunton is a 15 minute drive down the road.

roger

A number of years ago I ran a pub in Charlton Kings, although times have changed.

Mr E is right, the royal will be the best place to eat and drink. I am sure if you chat up the locals you will get into the working mans club (the title is a bit of a misnomer) which will be full of a mix of locals and "visitors".

There are a few Irish who regularly stay in and around the village - one of them used to have a part share in Macs Joy. I was fully stocked with shampoo on the day it was 2nd in the CH, but we still managed to drink it. I eventually turfed them out at 6am that morning!

I will ask around and see who is doing what and let you know. Where in the village are you staying and which nights?

Charlton Kings covers a very wide area! Mr E has already mentioned the Royal which is in the centre of the old village. There is another close by called the Merryfellow though its recent history is chequered. Also on the opposite side of the Church to the Royal is the CK Working Men's Club. On the Cirencester Road further out is the Little Owl - also had a chequered recent past.

At Sixways (London Road) there is the London Inn run by Roody, who had the Tivoli when it was a Sports Bar. That will be pretty lively. Also off Sixways, down Ryeworth Road is the Ryeworth Inn and closer to town on the London Road is the Beaufort Arms which is close to Holy Apostles traffic lights.

Where is your billet rtb?

Quick off the mark there gentlemen - many thanks!

Staying in Ryeworth Road and have sussed the nearest pub, via Google MAps, is The Ryeworth Inn but other than that I'm clueless.

Also providing it's not hosing down, I fancy a walk to the course which is what about an hour on foot?

All info and recommendations gratefully received.

Staying all from Monday - Thursday night but will be going out in Stow with friends staying there for a couple of evenings.

This is my first time ever staying in Cheltenham (driving ban for totting up of speeding points - take that, society!) so am looking to experience all the town at festival time has to offer.

I used to live in Ryewoth Road. The Ryeworth Inn used to be frequented by Jim Wilson. He brought the Gold Cup in the evening he won it on Little Owl.

London Inn only a few minutes walk and the Royal about 15.

I was going to ask you Rog whether you were walking.

It's a nice walk. It'll take you about an hour as you say. I've got from the centre of town to the course in 35 mins before and your place is only a brisk 15 mins or so into town.

There's several newsagents within a few hundred yards of where you are staying so you'll be able to nip out quickly for the papers.

The old restoration is one of the oldest pubs in town and it has recently been refurbished. It's right on the bottom of London road so only 10-15 mins walk away. They do several real ales if you are that way inclined.... and the food is ok for a pub.

Little Owl pub in Charlton Kings normally a stop off for us Cirencester punters. Barcelo hotel opposite must be busy too.
