Nigel Twiston Davies has done an amazing job in getting the 2010 Gold Cup winner back after an absence of 22 months. IC was desperately unlucky in defeat in today's Argento Chase and fully deserves to take his place in this year's Gold Cup. IC is a real credit to connections who should also be applauded for their loyalty to Paddy Brennan who gave the horse a superb ride at Cheltenham today.

It's not surprising IC tied up in the closing stages after an absence of 2 years. The trainer has stated that IC was not fully tuned upt and would strip fitter for the run. He ran a cracking race in defeat all things considered.

Agree with everything in the original post except I don't think he was desperately unlucky - the winner won on merit giving him 6 lbs.

Just watched it again and realized what a brutal race it was - 4 finishers only with Midnight Chase a fence behind the other three.

Not sure I'd be in a hurry to back any of the finishers next time out - and I wonder if discretion is the better part of valour and they might be better preparing IC for the Grand National and giving the Gold Cup a miss.

If he has a hard race in Gold Cup, they can forget the National - he was never going a yard at Aintree in the Betfair Bowl or whatever it's called after he won Gold Cup in 2010.

Agree with ReaseHeath - CT won on merit giving weight. Would not rush to back IC in the gold cup (not least cos already done my lot on BW and FL). Sellotape IC and TB together and catapult them to the moon, cos both got no chance with the young un's in the GC!!!

I thought IC was unlucky in the sense that the winning post came 40 yards too late. Tremendous performance by the winner and agree that a gruelling slog on heavy ground may subsequently prove to have taken an excessive toll. I stand by my original comment though that IC deserves to take his chance in what appears to be a substandard renewal of the Gold Cup in 6 weeks' time and I hope he runs well.

Can you explain 'winning post came 40 yards too late!!!' did they move it mid race?
Surely what you mean is a horse i personally had written off ran a great race but simply wasnt quite good enough anymore, This horse getting weight in his prime would have beaten this lot 100+lengths!!! Age has just caught up with a very very good horse....
