There is no way Kauto should have raced today after his schooling fall 2 weeks ago. This entry is both reckless and dangerous for Nicholls and Kauto was lucky to get through that race alive. He puffed him up all week and is correctly pulled up by Ruby, STUPID ENTRY.
Really annoys me that he has done this just to chance his luck at a festival win.

They had no way of knowing.  They thought he was ok but clearly he wasn't.

Interesting to note Nicholls has not had a chase winner at the festival since Kauto in 2009

I'm not at all sure that it was PN's decision. Bit like the fiasco with Peddlers Cross to be honest.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing,   imagine that, a trainer running a racehorse in a horse race, how cruel. The horse appeared fine and as soon as it became obvious that there was something amiss, he was pulled up.

Are you suggesting that if there is anything wrong with a horse either obvious or otherwise, that they are lucky not to die if they are asked to jump 4 or five fences, sounds like one cruel sport when you put it like that

Correct decision to run.
Report unclepuncle March 16, 2012 8:42 PM GMT
Think if Kauto was 3 years younger that they would definitley not have run as his preparation was clearly not good - it was literally a last throw of the dice, just hope they weren't influenced by prize money, trainers championships etc.Confused

In the end it was much like when Istabraq was pulled up at Cheltenham almost straight after the start.

The only clown is the person who started this thread AFTER the race was run.

"shocking Festival"? Only came away with the Champion and World Hurdle...
Report Masterminded March 17, 2012 9:06 AM GMT
Well World Hurdle really Harry Fry trained ROR. I'm just glad he's in one piece but it is clear that he was in no way fit & ready to run in a race as demanding as the Gold Cup. I'm just happy he was pulled up early before he did himself any harm.

Hi Graleboy6, don't worry your little head about it, come back when you are 9.

I'm pretty sure they were more influenced by the possible place in the history books than any monetary concerns.  He won the King George less than 3 months ago so deserved his chance!
Report Arklearkle March 17, 2012 9:54 PM GMT
I totally disagree with you Grale. Kauto wasnt the only horse to pull up at Cheltenham. Of course he was also pulled up there in 2010. PN won 2 of the four main races. How many other trainers even won 2 ordinary races there. The records would indicate that PN knows a bit more about horses than you Grale.

I just wish Nicholls would STFU about having Kauto 'better than he's ever been' before every race though.

You can set your watch by this garbage.

Hopefully it won't matter in future, since they should retire the horse immediately.
Report bbsband March 18, 2012 9:47 AM GMT
will they retire Kauto Star though?
Report ambrosec March 18, 2012 7:15 PM GMT
Do seem to remember Nicholls saying he had Kauto BETTER THAN HE'S EVER BEEN, before the betfair chase and the king george, would that not in retrospect seem quite plausible and if he got it wrong before the gold cup then he got wrong, it happens, pretty sure we all get things wrong from time to time

just added to his poor past efforts at the festival for a so called superstar he,s ran some shockers at cheltenham.so hard to say if it was due to setback, age or just par for the cause
